The Greyhound Project, Inc. | Who are we?

The Greyhound Project, Inc. is a volunteer, non-profit organization providing information about and promoting the adoption of retired racing greyhounds. Our purpose is to serve the common interests of greyhound adoption organizations, their volunteers, and others interested in the welfare of retired racing greyhounds on a national basis. We are not affiliated with any greyhound adoption program or organization.

The Greyhound Project was founded in the summer of 1992 and incorporated in the spring of 1993. We are all greyhound adopters, and several of us have been deeply involved with local adoption groups. When we organized, we decided that the adoption movement could use information rather than another adoption group, so that has been our goal.

Our Mission Statement

The mission of The Greyhound Project, Inc. is to promote the welfare and adoption of greyhounds by providing support and information to adoption organizations, adopters, and the public.

What do we do?

Celebrating Greyhounds Magazine Spring 2008Celebrating Greyhounds - The Magazine

Published from 1996-2017, Celebrating Greyhounds was a magazine for greyhound adopters, owners, and friends. Those with an interest in greyhounds, greyhound adoptions, sighthounds, or any dog, will find interesting information here.  The magazine won many Maxwell awards over the years, and each issue was beautifully laid out and jam-packed with content including photos, poetry, humor, and news. The Greyhound Project is in the process of digitizing all back issues, making the content available to the public.

National Adopt-a-Greyhound Month

The Greyhound Project founded National Adopt-a-Greyhound Month in 2010.  Its purpose is to spread the word about these wonderful dogs as pets.  With the help of professionally produced public service announcements and Let It Be Known Public Relations, The Greyhound Project gets the word out to hundreds of local and national media outlets with a focus on the first quarter of each year.

resource directoryAdoption Group Resource Directory

When The Greyhound Project launched, it was unclear how many adoption groups existed around the country. A number of resources listed groups, but none were all-inclusive. Putting all of the information together in one place proved to be a useful tool for supporting adoption efforts. The information in the Directory has been instrumental in organizing large scale relocation of surplus dogs from closed tracks throughout the country and continues to be used to arrange outlets for excess greyhounds. The Directory currently lists approximately 300 adoption groups and is now a part of this web site.

adopt an airportAdopt an Airport!

The Greyhound Project and the ASPCA launched the airport poster campaign in 1998. More than 150 large illuminated posters promoting Greyhound adoption appeared in 60 airports across the U.S. In 2001, The Project renewed the campaign with funding from the ASPCA and PetsMart Charities, resulting in more than 200 new displays.

Adopt a Greyhound Web Site

The Greyhound Project promotes and supports Greyhound adoption on the internet by sponsoring the Adopt-a-Greyhound web site (http://adopt-a-greyhound.org). This award-winning site helps potential adopters learn all about greyhounds and find their nearest adoption agency.
