    Lost and Found
Dogs, Cats, and Everyday Heroes at a Country Animal Shelter

Written by Elizabeth Hess, published by Harcourt Brace; ISBN: 0151003378], April 1998

    Review by Steve Frey:
I just finished a good read:  Lost and Found, by Elizabeth Hess.  It features various stories from her stint as a volunteer in an upstate NY humane society shelter.

For those who like to use the list to commiserate with others who "suffer" with animal (greyhound) adoption issues will find a lot in common with Hess.  As has been noted, the toughest part are the people, not the dogs.  She touches on some of the issues discussed here [on Greyhound-L]:

Is a marginal home better than euthanasia?
      Why people give up pets
Difficulities in dealing with existing animal cruelty laws, etc.

It does open one's eyes that there are a lot of animals being put down all over.  Of course, most of us have selected greyhounds as our focus, but I still found the book worthwhile.

Btw, greyhounds were mentioned once near the end and "couch potato" was in the same sentence :)

     Enjoy.  I did.

Lost History of the Canine Race

Written by Mary Elizabeth Thurston, published by Andrews & McMeel; [ISBN 0836205480], October 1996

This book has tons of pictures, many featuring Greyhounds. Pictures include pencil sketches, drawings, paintings, war photos, family photos, even a photo of "a first-century A.D. Roman bronze lamp of a Greyhound-like dog with a hare in it's mouth" (the oil goes into the hare). The book supposedly covers 15,000 years of the canine race. The author's preface proves interesting in itself as she expresses the importance of the canine's affect on us from childhood to old age and how we who treat our own dogs as members of our families, knowing that fierce bond between owner and canine, find a sense of kinship with people and animals.
