We have several adopted greyhounds in our road. We have a lovely "Heinz 57" dog the moment but intend to give a good home to a greyhound when the time is right.

I have four children and little time to spend with a pet. But I think kids need to spend time and responsibilty with something other than video games. Would love to adopt a greyhound....or bad idea. Would appreciate any feed-back! Thanks...Lulah

we have a wonderful grey named belle. she is the funniest dog we have ever had. keeps us laughing all the time. My neighbors give four bones to her every-day. then she carries them around the block then she brings them home to bury in the flower pots. we enjoy her so much we are going to foster greys. she loves to sleep and play.

In the 60's and 70's I raised racing greyhounds. I still love them more than any other breed. My favorite dog that I raised was F.F. Easily Eric CD. He raced for almost two year but had to retire due to a broken foot. My son took him as a 4-H project and trained him obedience. He earned his CD title. I think he was one of the first dogs to show people, including greyhound breeders, that greyhound could do more than just race. He was quite famous back in the early 70's. After getting his obedience title, we started him in Shutzund, I know I didn't spell that right, training. He was personal pretection trained and gave up his life protecting our property. "Lefty" as he was know had a routine that he and my son did to promote obedience training and 4-H. Even though he has been dead for over 20 years, I haven't forgotten him. I don't have greyhounds anymore. I'm raising dairy goats instead. It was such a pleasure to find this webpage. It has brought back very fond memories. Thank you.

Hello enjoyed reading the many letters about Greyhounds. After reading the part where 25,000 are killed (YEARLY!!!)I know I am going to have to pitch in and help somehow and I also am interested in adopting. I have to find an adoption agency near me.

Love your pages especially the Art Gallery. I am impatiently awaiting the arrival of my first greyhound. I am hoping he/she will be in the next group that comes up from the States in the early New Year, could it possibly be January 1st:)) I am trying to track down some needlework with greyhounds included in the picture no luck so far. I am a lurker on the Greyhound L are there any other lists for greyhound lovers? Good Luck in l999 with all your good work with the dogs.

What a refreshing and heartwarming site. Thank you. About 9 months ago I found a greyhound wondering the streets of Tucson, skinny and hungry. I invited him into my van and he "dutifully" climbed in with all of the manners of a perfectly-trained dog. When I said "lay down," he did just that. I petted him as I drove home and wondered how I would take care of a dog with such a strange snout, arthritic-looking joints, and skinny ankle bones. But as soon as I turned into our driveway three miles down a dirt road, 4000 feet elevation (on a mountain), this sad dog perked up his ears, jumped up, and stuck his nose against the window in excitement. It was as if he sensed he was home for good. I let him out of the van and into the fence to meet my other 5 strays (2 Springers, 1 Husky, and 2 Whatevers). He immediately became a loving part of our family. The sad part is that he was wearing a collar with the name E.Z. on it - and a disconnected phone number. I told the operator that I had found someone's dog and would she call them and give them my number so they could retrieve their dog. I received a phone call from a lady who said she couldn't believe her stupid husband had not removed the collar before "dumping" the dog. She then told me to take it to the pound and promptly hung up. While I have since taken in two more strays (I have five fenced acres and each stray is always graciously accepted by the other dogs - what a blessing for me!) E.Z remains my best friend! He is certainly one one very loyal sole!

This is a great web page. I am searching for a suitable pet for myself and two children(ages 13 and 10). I am very interested in retired races. I have heard many great reports on Greyhounds as pets. How does one determine a particular GH will like water prior to adoption? I am hoping that the GH will go boating with us.

Greyhounds are the greyt-est! We've had 5 greys in our hearts. Presently we have a 7 yr old female-Bea, a 4 yr. old male-Cosmo, and a wildly enthusiastic 8 mo. gh pup-Finnegan, who is the antithesis of the normal quiet 'hound! They're the best dogs -keep us busy walking, talking about greys, doing pet therapy, etc., etc. Our family got interested in the breed years ago after reading an article in Sports Ill. about a CT woman, Eileen McCaughern, and the adoption group REGAP of CT. We adopted two wonderful dogs through her -they have, sadly, crossed the Rainbow Bridge where they wait for us, young again and pain free. The lesson we learned from those two wonderful dogs is that love doesn't divide -it multiplies....hence our family of hounds (geez, cats and people too) has grown! Plus we began placing greyhounds ourselves first through REGAP and then also with WAG - both of CT. It has been the most satisfying of experiences -finding good homes for wonderful dogs! But, I guess if you are on this comment line you already know how great this breed is!

We adopted Babe (Backwater Babe) in September. It has been great. She is the most people orientated grey I have ever seen. For those of you that don't think greys get along well with cats, babe shares the sun beams with mine. If there are any play groups in the Hartford area contact me we would love to join.

Great web sight...we were the owners of a Shar-Pei for the past 10 years, but she past away 6 months ago to cancer and we are now interested in other breads and the Greyhound caught our eye. To be able to provide a home for an adult Greyhound is something that would make us feel good and this sight is providing us with much information to help us make a good decision. I have been involved with Greyhound adoptions with Michigan Greyhound Connection, and Greyhound Pets of America chapters in W. Palm Beach , Midsouth chapter, and N. Alabama Chapters. I have adopted two Female Greyhounds "Nikki" and "Lindsey" and they are my babies. I really can not think of a more rewarding experience, these beautiful dogs give people unconditional love. They are so much fun to have, each dog I have met has their own distinct personality, and they form strong bonds with their adopted parents. Please keep up the good work! Greyhounds make great pets.

WE STARTED OUT WITH A SALUKI AND AQUIRED AN AFGHAN TO KEEP THE SALUKI COMPANY(MANY YEARS AGO). I HAVE TRIED TO CONVINCE HIM THAT SIGHTHOUNDS NEED THE COMPANIONSHIP OF OTHER SIGHTHOUNDS. I'M STILL WORKING ON HIM. I WOULD LIKE TO FIND A RESCUE ORGANIZATION IN MY AREA. I AM NOT GIVING UP ON THE IDEA OF HAVING A GREYHOUND.

What a great web site! I am considering adoption after two wonderful experiences with local adoption groups recently. Three weeks ago, I was shopping at "Peddler's Village" in Bucks County, PA, and what a delight to play with the seven dogs brought by a local adoption group, and to learn about the breed. And, yesterday, in a fit of last minute shopping at Phillipsburg Mall in NJ, what a delight to see several dogs dressed in costume, serving as "Santa's Helpers"! Best of luck to all of the local adoption groups that run events like these, because I am now a believer in the magic qualities of this dog. Count me in as an "adoptive parent" next year!

I just adopted Timber (formerly DeeDee, racing name Its Your Pup) November 6. She is wonderful and we're very much in love, but we are having housebreaking challenges. I've read lots of advice on the Web and believe I'm doing all the right things: I keep a written schedule of what time she does what, I let her out frequently, I reward her with tons of love when she relieves herself outside, I point out accidents inside and ask her "what's that?" in a deep voice followed by letting her out (I have yet to catch her in the act), I'm using Simple Solution to remove odors, and I'm keeping her crated while I'm at work. She's actually having more accidents now than when she first came home. If anyone wants to offer words of wisdom, I'd love to hear from you.

We became greyhound owners via the back door. Our daughter planned to adopt one, then moved into a house with no fenced yard. After seeing Blaze and hearing her story (her former owner got married and her new husband made her give all her pets away -- can you believe that???) she found a permanent home with us. We took to visiting the local flea market each month where the local greyhound adoption agency set up a booth, to share stories and visit with the hounds. Well, you can imagine what happened next -- one of the hounds up for adoption picked my husband to be her new owner! So now we have two and love every minute of it. Even our Doberman gets along great with them. They are the best dogs we've ever had!

My wife and I recently donated a few dollars to Greyhound Companions of Missouri--they were wrapping gifts at the Library Limited in St. Louis, MO. We love all animals, especially dogs (we are also members of PETA). The GCMO had three wonderful dogs at their gift wrapping station and they seemed just wonderful. We would love to adopt a greyhound, but wwe have two other dogs (a westie and a Heinze 57!)and were wondering how they would get along with a greyhound. We have a small fenced in yard with locks on the gate, so that would not be a problem. Our puppies are indoor folks--we would never dream of keeping any dog outside. We would love to consider adopting a greyhound--they seem so gentle and kind. Thank you for the wonderful web site.

Strange because the love the outside and not the inside. They want in for about 10 minutes then they want to go play with the wild things. They even like playing in the snow. I'm interested in adopting a Greyhound. I've had people tell me that they are so passive that bolder dogs can chew and bite them withour a response. The lady said her Greyhound was attacked by another breed dog in a transfer house and the dog really injured her greyhound where it has scars today. I know they do not make good watchdogs, but I want a companion dog as part of my household.

My wife and I are in the process of adopting, based on the glowing recommendation of my cousin (adopted 4 years ago). Since we have spent the better part of the past 4 years nursing our now departed Standard Schnauzers through progressively debilating conditions (age/genetic related),the adoption of a greyhound seems to be one of those rare, "win/win" situations. Your web pages have been immensely helpfull, particularly the portions relating to breed-specific physical/psychological characteristics. Your dedication to this project and site is clearly evident and we appreciate the guidance it has provided to us.

My husband and I adopted a greyhound in January 1998 from the NJ Greyhound Adoption Program. They are fabulous dogs and a lot of fun! I am also very impressed with the NJGAP organization. We also have a male Jack Russell Terrier and they get along pretty well considering their size difference (the greyhound loves the JR, but being the JR that he is, he simply tolerates her).

I applaud the work your organisation does and I hope that one day the senseless killings of these dogs will stop. Unfortunately the efforts of ourselves and others have been in vain as despite saving over 50 Greyhounds in under 18 months, the board of the Q.G.R.A. has decided to take the program from us. Good luck to all involved with the adoption groups everywhere.

Visiting the Greyhound Friends Kennel in Greensboro has been a real experience. The Greyhounds are all beautiful and so loving. I am looking for a greyhound to adopt and it really is difficult to make a decision. If you have never visited this kennel, you need to do so and take a friend that you think may not want a greyhound, but is willing to go with you. A dear friend went with me last week to visit the new shipment of greyhounds and she told me she is going to get a greyhound if anything ever happens to her dog. My bet is that she'll get one before then. It is amazing what kind of hold, just visiting this place, can put on you to adopt a greyhound. I hope to find the one for me soon. I love this site, it really shows the true feeling that the greyhound oweners have for their hounds. Wish me luck on my next visit, hopefully "THE ONE" will be there.

Our retired racer is Fremont, and he will be 9 years old next month. Whether I fall asleep on the bed or our sofa, he is always close by. When he's awake, he is usually playing with our 1 1/2 year old whippet mix, Erica. It is such a joy to watch them chasing each other around our yard or playing tug of war with a toy. Fremont finally has his chance to be a puppy!

I am very happy to find this page; I especially enjoyed the pictures. I am a student at Kent State University in Ohio and I am from Hungary. I bought my first greyhound in 1993. Since I am a 16 times National Champion distance runner, my greyhound was a perfect running mate and pacemaker (on distance practices). I was amused to see him to run sometimes two times more than me because he always chased something. It was simply beautiful. I think "I fell in love" with greyhounds in those years. Now I have another greyhound too, who was abandoned and I found during a practice. Now my Dad - who also became a great greyhound fun- takes care of them until I am here in the United States. Sometimes I just can't wait to go home to see my family and run with my beautiful greyhounds. Greyhounds means "Agar" in Hungarian as you see, the address of my homepage is also "I am agar". I would like to make a special Greyhound homepage, but I don't have time now. Probably when I am done here and go back to Hungary for good. I also thought to take some Greyhounds with me from here if it is possible. I would love to help on them since I found out how horrible life they have after they are done with racing. It's terrible. I already took quite a few pictures of Greyhound Buses because there is picture of a running Greyhound. I wish all the best for everybody and have fun with Greyhounds because they are the most special "pets" and friends I have ever met.

Hello! I am seriously considering adopting a Greyhound. I have read a lot about them and think that it would be an ideal pet/companion. Though I feel very strongly about it, I have lots of research to do on the subject. I am going to gather as much info as possible so that I can provide a good loving home for him. I even got a name picked out for him - CEASER! Now only if I can decide on the color :) I would like to get in touch with someone in Alexandria, VA who has gone thru the process of adopting a racer. Also, is it possible to get a racer that was born on my birth date? November 18. Like me he would also be a Scorpio :) I know, I know..I am just nuts! Enjoyed the site very much and have even bookmarked it! Sanjay

We've got to get a ban on dog racing so that we no longer have to "rescue" these wonderful dogs! 25,000 dead greyhounds per year in the U.S. is not a success story.

This week will be three months that I have shared my life with my little girl, Nova, a stunning 2 yr old grey. It seems like she has been a part of my life for many years, and I cannot imagine how I did without her. I actually can't wait to get up in the AM to see and greet her!! The joy this dog (and I am sure others as well)brings is incalcuable. Greyhounds are healers...their gentlility, passionate eyes, soft, velvety fur--their total softness--make for calm and lovingness. Now I see why greys make great therapy dogs and my goal is to work with mine so that she will do just that and bring to others the same joy she gives me. I am blessed with an especially fine little girl; really, she is perfect--intelligent, calm, affectionate, a little silly, but sensible, noble and graceful. What is so remarkable is that she was all these things before I adopted her...I just provided the atmosphere which I guess brought out these qualities. When you think of it, isn't it amazing that these wonderful animals are so endowed? You could never "train" a dog to be like these greys; they are just naturally superior. A friend of mine observed that maybe the answer is that grey are bred for speed, health, and great temperament...and NOT looks. Without regard for "designer breed" looks, all the effort goes into the dog itself and the results, as we grey parents know, are remarkable! How lucky we who have adopted are!! We've been let onto the best kept secret in dogdom--the exracer greyhound!! For those of you who are wasting time "thinking about it," don't. Do it now!!! It will be a love affair you won't regret! PS. My girl is a little nervous in the car for some reason. A grey friend owner suggested an herbal liquid called "Rescue Remedy" available in health food stores. Does anyone know anything about it or had any experience with it? My friend says she never goes anywhere with her greys without it, but I want to be sure it's safe. Would appreciate some feedback. Thx.

Any advice out there for a novice grey owner? We have had Sammy for a couple of weeks, and he has had diarrhea almost the entire time. Has been to the vet, been wormed with Panacur; now we think this round of diarrhea has been caused by his eating our periwinkle ground cover. We called the vet again, have him on Kaopectate, boiled gr. meat and rice, but are worried. Is diarrhea a weakness with greys? Any advice on keeping the little rascal from eating our plants and bushes (we live in the woods, so we are surrounded by tasty treats if he likes leaves!) Is there a product you can spray on the bushes or something? Also, anyone with good advice on teaching greys to sit? I basically gave up temporarily since he is feeling poorly; would like to resume, but it FREAKS him out! I have trained several dogs before, but don't know how to proceed to down, stay, etc., without doing sit first. How have some of you done it? (Offering a treat after the one sit I got him to do did not work). Any experienced owners out there with words of wisdom? These two minor problems are just worrying me, but we love our Sammy and he is a sweet and affectionate dog.

Hello fellow greyhound lovers! We recently adopted a retired racer from NGAP in Philadelphia on Oct.10. He's a 2 yr. old, black, #74 male. We've named him Monty. It took about 8 years for me to finally convince my parents a greyhound (or just a dog) was for us. I first met them when a friend of mine invited me over and 2 huge dogs came running over. One leaned on me and the other one waited her turn to lean on me. I wasn't scared, and I asked her what kind of dogs they were. She said they were retired racing greyhounds. I thought they were the most beatiful creatures on 4 legs. :) Since that day, I've been gathering information on them. Now, my dad thinks the dog is his! :) Monty is such a greyt dog. He comes when called, stays, learning to sit, and knows acouple phrases: "Go lay down" "Let go inside!" "Who wants a cookie?" "Where's Norman?" (that's his hedgehog that makes a grunt when squeezed. He loves it) "Wanna go for a ride?" and especially "Let's go to bed". We've only had him alittle over a month and a half and already he's cemented himself into our hearts. I won't lie and said he was an angel, the perfect dog. He's had 5 accidents in the house (which I think is pretty good, all were human errors, not watching/reading his "i have to go potty" body language") and he's got the habit of chewing on things he really shouldn't (even though he's got plenty of bones he chews too),but most of us have all conseeded to the greyhound thinking "If I can get my mouth around it, it's mine!" and keep things out of his reach he shouldn't chew. He mostly chews on bad stuff when he's alittle stressed. (If my sister isn't home, it's going to be something of her's he's going to chew.) All and all, he's mostly a big goofy clown. I've always seen and thought of greyhounds as being graceful and regal... now I know "clown" is a better term for them. :) If you're thinking about adopting a greyhound, do the research and if you think they're the right dog for you, Go get one! :o) You won't be sorry! PS- Monty also lives with 2 cats, and has a GSD mix buddy he plays with. Also remember to talk with the adoption group you choose to let them know the kind of grey you're looking for (good with cats/small animals...etc). I'm sorry this is so long, when it comes to my grey, I can't seem to shut up! : D Thanks for listening. :)
