I am a writer developing
characters for a series of novels. I would like to
include an adopted, retired racing greyhound as a major
character. I need information about personality traits,
eccentric behaviors, problems and rewards of integrating
a greyhound into the household, any personal insights
that you may choose to share.

Two days ago we
visited the N.G.A.P. in Philadelphia. The family majority
(mom and 4 kids) have wanted a dog for many years. Dad
never did. The day after Christmas dad broke! He said
yes. The rest of the family and a pet-loving frie nd were
off! Search Day 1 brought the family to two local
shelters. One tried to pawn off a pit bull to a family of
kids. The other had only some very high spirited
selections. Disappointed, the family returned. Dad
suggested the greyhounds, knowing only that they were
said to be great family pets and that many are destroyed.
The family friend happens to be a radio personality. She
mentioned the family's dillema on the air and the calls
started coming in. By noon on Search Day 2 the family was
at the NGAP and they fell in love with the greyhounds.
The paperwork is completed and the dad who never wanted a
dog has been searching the net for three days finding and
sharing information with the family. We are now in the
waiting stage. We hope to hear something Monday.
Everybody we read about loves their greyhounds. This will
be our first dog. We had a cat before our 7 yr old was
born, but he would be allergic and the cat was given to
another nice family. I guess the biggest concern is that
we will be good owne rs and good trainers. With so many
living here I hope the dog doesn't get confused as to
permissable activity. Dad will not tolerate eating from
the table or being on the furniture. Wish us luck. The
Page is great. I feel better knowing that there is help
out there.

We have had our
retired racers for 2 1/2 years and can't imagine what our
lives would be like without them! Bingo (On a Binge) is a
7-1/2 year old black male, and Cena (Diane's in Charge)
is our 8 year old blue female. They are swee t,
affectionate dogs and both get along very well with our
two geriatric, somewhat tempermental cats. I was (and
still am )a cat-person and had no intention of EVER
owning a dog. But these animals win your heart like no
other beast can...adopt a greyhound , you will not regret
it.

We are proud
owners of 4 (four) retired racers. They have brought much
joy and fun to our lives. They are Daisy (2 yr 50 lbs
fawn w/black face), Diane (3 yrs , 60 lbs, fawn), Dick
Clark (3 yrs, 80 lbs{no fat}, jet black), Miss Alfi e (11
yrs, 60 lbs, fawn). Miss Alfie is Diane's mother. We
would be happy to share our experiences about these
wonderful dogs if anyone if considered adpotion or would
like to swap dog stories. To these who feel greyhound
owners promote dog racing ---is a enormous mistake, we
are trying to clean up the aftermath!!!! Aaron

they will let me get one for my 16th birthday in a few
weeks. I don't think they know how much I lo ve and want
a greyhound. My parents are a not to sure about adopting,
with already having a little dog in the house and a cat,
so I can't figure out a way to convience them. If any one

This past July I
had to have my 6yr old greyhound Curly, put to sleep (he
had a tumor near his heart which could not be operated
on). I had only had Curly 1 month short of a year. I
remember the day that I adopted Curly. I knew his name
only had a suspicion as to what he looked like. But when
I heard one of the volunteers say to someone "His
name is Curly" a smile came to my face
instantaneously and I struggled to get a closer look and
to give him one of the treats that I had brought along.
When we were finally introduced, my eyes filled up with
tears and I couldn't speak. I think it was a combination
of emotions. First, I was awlfully excited about finally
adopting him and secondly, I will never...never...
understand how anyone with an ounce of compassion could
knowingly bring harm to these creatures of beauty.
Actually, I was a little embarassed and felt pretty silly
standing there all teary eyed. But of course I brought
along a camera (photo-nut) and had Don, from Make Peace
with Animals take our picture regardless (Curly and Me
that is). I have that picture in a magnetic frame on my
fridge and every time I look at it it reminds me of the
day Curly came into my life and how very lucky I was to
have him. On a happier note, I now have a new baby named
Ralston who is two years young. I couldn't sleep the
night before I was going to adopt him, so I arrived at
the kennel an hour and a half earlier very (and I mean
very) anxious . I Absolutely love him to pieces. But I
have to tell you that I don't think a day goes by that I
don't think of Curly. And since Ralston had some mighty
big shoes to fill,I don't think any other greyhound could
have filled them quite so well as he did and continues to
do everyday. I miss you Curl and don't worry, Ralston's
doing one heck of a job taking care of me.... I love you
both. (Curly & Ralston's) Mama a.k.a. (Darlene)

I have an adopted
female greyhound (Patches) who is the most wonderful pet
I have ever owned. She makes no demands except that I
give her plenty of love, a warm bed and a square meal. I
have had several different breeds, but none compare to
Patches. She does have a companion in our little Italian
Greyhound - Abbey. Patches is definately the calm one of
the two. Greyhounds = LOVE!!!

What can I say
about greyhounds? They are the most graceful, loving,
innocent breed of dog. My family and I have had a
beautiful brindle-colored female for almost 9 years named
Sheba. When she first came to us, she couldn't climb
stairs or play with us. Our love and patience have been
rewarded every day just by having her with us.

I have enjoyed
viewing your web page and appreciate the effort! However,
I do see an enourmous conflict in your said love of the
Greyhound and your involvement in racing and therefore
support of the NGA. Sure ,it must be fun to wat ch, but
as you must be aware the NGA is no more than an
orginization to create and nurture a massive Greyhound
factory. Unfortunately the thousands of dead Greyhounds
that are considered a "bad product" by the
industry (factory) will never make your adopt ion list.
As the result of an extremely selective process that
skims the "cream off the top" the unfortunate
"slower" masses will meet an early demise. The
industry that supports this and the racing fan that looks
the other way, knowing it occurs, can n ever claim to
truly love and appreciate the greyhound. The spirit of
greyhounds and the right for them to experience (once
bred by owners) a full life, is what I appreciate. The
NGA and the owners/breeders need to take some
responsibility for the thousa nds of greyhounds they
bring into the world only to extinguish there lives on a
whim. The adoption programs that are NGA sponsored are, I
am afraid, nothing more than propaganda. The numbers of
dogs never seen, having never made the track, that's wha
t deserves the attention of caring Greyhound enthusiasts,
that is my opinion... Sincerely, Zane Grey

Hi. My email
address is troutnat@c-zone.net. I am not into GHs,
although the sweater pattern might do for a Doberman
Pinscher. I do belong to Doberworld, the Doberman list. I
would like to either copy the sweater.htm and upload it
on my dog's page for others to use for Dobes, or to get
permission to add your page as a link to the page. The
page is at http://www.c-zone.net/troutnat/isis.html
Please let me know if it is okay. I really would
appreciate you doing this, because so many people can
knit and do not have sweaters for their Doberkids this
year. Sincerely, Bonnie Mider, Isis and
Tyson...A.K.A.-Juvenile Delinquent.

First off, let me
just say this is a superb Website - not only in content,
but in presentation as well! I have learned alot during
my tour of your site, and it only reaffirms my desire to
adopt a Greyhound! My husband and I recently added a
beautiful Whippet (also a sighthound) puppy to our small
family, consisting of us and a feisty little Jack Russell
Terrier. It has been great fun, and we are both
convinced, firstly, that there is a third dog in our
future, and secondly, that it is destined to be a
Greyhound...

Have you all
noticed from reading the GuestBook that it seems Greyts
are like potato chips...you can't settle for one....I
have two boys myself and would have more if the room was
more readily available...But with two two legged yo
unguns and two four legged babies....and allllllll the
toys for the four of them, well I ran out of couch and
floor room. BUT i still wouldn't trade them all for the
world!

I adopted a
retired races in July of 1995. She had been abused and I
couldn't even touch her without her screaming out in
agony. Now she runs the house, I can touch her, she loves
me and my husband and our two bichones to death. She's a
good dog and I'm glad we have her now to protect her and
feed her a lot. She's put on lots o weight and has become
quite pushy for affection. Get a greyhound. They need us
and they're wonderful dogs. My baby's name is Miss Mary
Marie Metcalf a nd she's all black and all appetite. I
think she thinks my bichons are racing rabbits.

GREAT WEB SITE.
Please do not tell my owner--ZEKE about it. He's a five
year old retiree who has taken over my futon, my sofa and
will be after my computer soon. Of course, I would not
have it any other way. If you have question s about
adoption ask away--Greyhound fans are happy to talk. I am
included in that group until Zeke takes away my computer
privileges...

This is a terrifec
site! We are considering adopting a retired greyhound and
I came across this page right away. It is so
comprehensive - it answered most of our questions right
away - and gave us links to so much more! Keep up the
good work - we are almost 100% sure that we want to adopt
one of these great dogs!

We are proud to be
owned by Dawn (Lilly) and Won Won (Call Nine Won Won!).
We have been their provider of comfort for 1.5 and 2.5
years. They are both 5 years old. They are the greatest!
To think that my husband didn't want an i nside dog! He
is now the one that wants them to sleep with us! Anyone
that has questions or wants to come and see grey's in
action just send me an e-mail!

We have two
Greyhounds, CJ and Chloe. Both are 45mph coach potatoes!
We are considering adopting one more, but with only one
couch. I wonder if we have enough room. We also have a
min schnauzzer who is the boss of these lovely ladies.
Even though they both out way here by 50 or more pounds,
they let her lead the way. I have enjoyed reading your
home page, and found interesting info that you would not
find elsewhere. Thank you

I have two
greyhounds one adopted in August this year and another in
October of this year(1996). They are a joy. It is
difficult to find good information on greyhounds and
thanks to your website you have been very helpful. Almost
more so than our local adoption agency at the track.
Blender and Bear will thank you as well. Blender is a
black and white mix born 2-94 and Bear is a very dark
brindle born 9-94. Two youngsters for my wife, our 15 yr.
old son and I to coddle, have fun with, and who knows
what else.

We have two
Greyhounds, Stormy and Riot, that we adopted this year.
Stormy came from the Juarez(Mexico) racetrack and Riot
came from a Texas track. Juarez closed down in February
so we got Stormy and loved him so much we had to get him
a girlfriend, Riot(we had to teach him English of
course). Greyhounds are the best pets ever and our
experience has been fantastic!!

It was really nice
to find your site on the Web. I spent all of my childhood
with greyhounds, my parents were breeders. Recently, I
took a trip to Greentrack located in Eutaw, Alabama and
saw first hand what a difference the adoption agencies
are making. Within weeks of the track's closing over 200
greyhounds were safely on their way to new homes, I was
AMAZED! Accolades to all of those who make this
possible!!!

We just adopted a
5 year old retired male named Rufus. We have had him in
our home a week. He gets along great with our three cats
and small dog. This morning he shared his breakfast with
the 6 month old kitten. Imagine them both eating out of
the same dish !!!! so much for the story that greyhounds
and cats can't live together in harmony.
