We just adopted our first Greyhound, Oskosh Lee, about 1 month ago. What a sweetheart! He's 7 yrs. old, fawn colored and it was love at first sight! Let's just say he chose us! He has had some problems settling in with his new home. He was at a "foster home" for about a month with 8 other greyhounds. So coming into a home with two cats and less hectic he's still trying to figure out where he fits in. We spend hours with him, let's just say he's very easy to spoil. One look at those soulful brown eyes of his is enough to melt your heart. We were told when we met him that if you have a couch well forget about sitting on it anymore he will take over-boy is that the truth! He has taken quite a shine to me since his foster mom was with him all day long he's taken to women. So I have a 70 lb. velcro sidekick with me at all times-which is fine with me! Greyhound Guardians are one fantastic group and I would recommend to anyone to adopt a greyhound not only because of their sweet dispostion but just to save them from the atrocities that the retired hounds are put through-no animal deserves to be treated like that! Again-SAVE THE GREYHOUND! Thank you!

I formerly owned a greyhound who was the absolute love of my and my childrens life. It's just been a year, and we miss his sweet face. My daughter has given new meaning to the words "dog tags" by wearing Billy's on her chain! Anyone considering adopting should. We will again and soon. Just looking for the right hound to go with our crazy german shepard.

I love your site and browse it often. One of these days I WILL own a greyhound. I own a very happy and loveable pointer. Unfortunately he does not enjoy the company of other dogs. Maybe he just hasn't met a dog he likes! I have spoken with a rescue league and they assure me that he has the potential to like a greyhound, possibly a female. For now I will just keep browsing and hopefully decide completely about adopting a greyhound. Maybe a trial meeting with a greyhound could turn out promising for my pointer. Until then, I will enjoy browsing your site. Keep up the good work!

My wife and I have adopted all of our dogs from the Animal Rescue League. We currently have two dogs living with us, a black lab and a "lurcher", which is a cross-breed between a greyhound and "?". They are bred in England primarily for racing and hunting. There is a National Lurcher and Racing Club (NLRC) in England. Are you aware of any such organization in the U.S.? We support your efforts as much as we can. Keep up the great work!

You have created a truly wonderful site that brings many of
sighthounds wonderful attributes to the fore front. I owned
a Saluki that was a sweet and most loving companion. I have
a question with reagrds to longer running. I am a Marathon
runner and I will be looking for a running companion in the
future. In this regard the Saluki is geared towards higher
endurance than the Greyhound. How would a Greyhound handle
running 11 plus miles per day. Are they suited to this task
or just to short high speed blasts?

Great Site, I am a helper at the greyhound adoption program her in Brisbane (Australia). Our program is quite new and is having its troubles getting off the ground. Your site has given me some good ideas that may help things move a lot faster. Whilst greyhounds adoptive parents are a new concept here, its encouraging to see that they have done so well in your country.

Hi! I have a 7-year-old black w/ white greyhound that we
rescued a few years ago. He has been the best dog that
anyone can ask for. For those who are thinking about
adopting a greyhound, all I have to say is DO IT!!
You won't regret it. They are loyal, sweet, and loving.

be: as companions. Great web site. Thanx for helping

We adopted 2 retirees on November 11, 1995. Since that
time we have helped a few other Albertans (directly north
of Idaho, but in Canada) adopt some of these beautiful
creatures through the Greyhound Pets Inc. in Idaho. Our babes are "Willie", a 7 year old male and "Lacie",
a five year old female. They live with a 9 year old cat, who
who thinks she is a dog. There is no-where in Alberta to
purchase anything "greyhound related", jewellery, coats, etc.
Any information would be appreciated. Other than that, I really
liked you site and as a hound owner its good to know that
you're not the only crazy one.

We have been previous owners of a Rotteweiler and of course we have our faithfull adopt-a-pet Maggie dog. We recently discovered how beautiful Greyhounds were when we visited our Greyhound Race Track. Several dogs were being shown for adoption during our visit. So I'm learning everything I can on the internet and through books about this beautiful breed. We are thinking about adopting a retired racer. One question that I haven't had answered is how much does it cost to adopt a Greyhound?

Brandy (4 yr old female brindle)came to live with us almost a year ago. We adopted her from the Retired Greyhound Trust in Oxford, England. Since then, I have written in the guestbook several times to express, as all of us seem to do, my love for this breed and what wonderful creatures they are. And don't think about adopting, just do it!!! You won't regret it! I could stand to have at least two more!!!
Now, I finally have a question. She can't stand for me to trim her nails. Does anyone have any good ideas on how to keep her nails down without using a dog nail clipper? Walks just don't seem to do. Please let me know your ideas! And if anyone in the UK gets together for a greyhound party, please let us know. Thanks!!!

.Hell-o Bruce,
I love your Celebrating Greyhounds calender. I buy 2 or 3 every year at our NGAP picnic. I don't understand though why so many of the dogs are not on leashs. I've heard and read too many horror stories of greyhounds running off because the owner thought their dog was trained not to. Mine have gotten away from me a time or two and it scared the holy begebers out of me.
Another thing I don't understand is why some of the greyhounds are frolicking in the snow without coats on. My dogs wear coats if the temperature or wind chill is below 40.
I love your web page. Keep up the good work.

Of all the sites for grayhounds, yours is the best. I had a computer crash earlier this year and just rediscovered you today. I totaly enjoy reading all the comments from grayhound owners. We are all in love with the breed. What is neat is when you can get your dog out with other grayhounds and the way they react to their own breed. It is super. Gomer is now three, he has been an over grown puppy for the last year and is now setteling down. He has one problem and that is at night when we are ready for bed, twice this week, he has growled and snapped at my husband when he sets on the bed. Gomer has had full run of the house for a year and never has responded to us in this way. What should we do?

I have a 4year old female Doberman. She was depressed after my husband and I had to put down our 12 year old Great Dane. I had seen a program about greyhounds and decided to rescue one. I now have a 22 month old male named Witty. He is the sweetest thing. I was told that exracers take time to warm up to their new families, but Witty didn't follow this rule. I love coming home and having him great me at the dog with his tail wagging and him following me around the house. The only thing is the Doberman is no longer the fastest one in the yard.

Great site. Although my dog is not a full breed greyhound, (he's half huskie, half greyhound, I've had him since he was six weeks old) I really enjoyed your well engineered and informative site. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the great info. I'm looking to the future when a greyhound can share my life

I own a retired greyhound and I am considering adopting a second one. They definitely are great pets and would recommend them to anyone wanting a beautiful love in their lives.

Wonderful site, very informative. I've known for years that my first dog would be a greyhound. So, when I finish with school, I'll be adopting! Thanks for the list of agencies!

I received Emma (2-yr. old fawn brindle) in May 1998 from
Greyhound Friends of North Carolina. She is such a joy!
She loves everyone. I think Greyhounds will be the only
dog for me from now on.
I learned of Greyhound Friends of NC from your web site.
Thanks.

We are glad to see such efforts to save greyhounds. We live in Colorado near CSU Vet. teaching hospital where they do a large part of their studying on Greyhounds. We have a white/black 4 year companion named Sam. She raced under OREO COOKIE until she was just over 2. We are glad to have her in our lives. Thank you for your efforts!
