I live in the North Alabama region. I personally have adopted two big brindle boys....I took my first home....Slash- Remember Slash- was the racing name, in March of 95. I have had the wonderful opportunity to foster two others in the last three months. The first was a beautiful little black girl named MOON and she went on to find a great home with her new little brother...Woodrow the beagle. My second foster was named Draper. He also is a big beautiful Brindle boy....almost could pass as Slash's twin. Well, I am pleased to report that Draper also found a good home.....He fostered with me and is now a permanent fixture of my home. Slash is 6 and Draper is 2....and they have fit in wonderfully with my two children who are 7 and 3. I would recommend a Hound to anyone with no reservations if they are looking for a loyal companion to love and be loved by. Have a GREYT day.....

I recently saw a piece on Greyhound adoptions. One owner described them as very docile, perfectly happy to lay around the house and very calm. That would be the ideal dog for me. I have two cats and I wonder how a Greyhound would integrate into the household. Anyone with insight please drop me an e:mail and share your insights/experiences. Also, is there an Atlanta chapter that I can contact about adopting? Thanks!

We got are greyhound about 1-1/2 years ago and love him like a family member. He probably owns are house more than we do. He has comfortables and blankets spread all around this house. We are thinking about getting a second greyhound, but we are not sure. We are gone most of the day, since we both work, but I do come home for lunch for a hour or two. When we are gone Payton (As in Walter Payton) stays out in the garage with a heater or fan and lots of blankets and water. Does anyone have any suggestions for us if we should get a second or not? He does have access to the backyard and gets spoiled more than us. Payton gets waffles on the weekend and lots of love and walks around the neighborhood. Please respond if you have two greyhounds or more.

My name is Kelly Owens, and my husband and I are considering adopting a greyhound. I just wanted to talk to someone who has adopted one before, so that I could ask a few questions. It breaks my heart to think of these beautiful dogs being killed for no reason. Please if anyone would share their greyhound experiences with me, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

We've had our Snoop since July. He is just great. Intelligent and sensitive. My husband says he never owned a smart dog until now. Snoop stays glued to him and even tries to sit on his lap...most of his 73 lbs makes it but his back legs kind of dangle. Thanks for your page.

Great to see such a wonderful site for Sight hounds! I've had Thumper (7yr.old, blue-brindle, female) for two years and recently, Emeril (3yr.old, HUGE, red fawn, male) since February. Two are great!!! Suprised to hear of a greyhound (are you sure it was?) biting unprovoked. My experience is they are very shy and totally affectionate.

We just got to bring our new family addition home. We just adoped Doc Supreme from Greyhound Friends North West. Doc had to spend the night at the vet's last night due to some post surgical problems, but he's home now. He's spent the afternoon exploring and getting to know the rest of the family (1 yorkie and 2 cats). So far he's fitting right in! We feel very honored to be able to have him join our family. Thank you Greyhound Friends North West!!

Who is responsible for these dogs actions after they are placed? Had one placed here locally that bit a child unprovoked. Has this happened before? And who decides what animals have the correct temperment for placement instead of being euthanised? Do these adoption people know anything about temperment and drives?

We're still in the "serious consideration" phase of adopting a Greyhound. We've just recently fenced our backyard (60ft x 95 ft) with 4-ft fence (hope that's high enough). We're also gathering all the info we can on Greyhounds. Great to see all this info is available to us! We're moving along at a snail's pace to make sure this is REALLY what we want to do. We really love dogs, but we had to put down our Dalmation about 18 months ago (cancer) and we still miss him! Getting attached to another dog is a little scarry. Anyway, thanks for all the great info! WISH US LUCK!

We adopted Gracie 6 months ago and she is the best thing that has ever happened to us! We will be receiving another greyhound this weekend to foster, as there seem to be 1 or 2 tracks in the Northeast closing and there are 80 dogs that need to find homes immediately. If we had room for all 80 we would take them! Our "master" Gracie is a 6 year old retired fawn. They are truly the most loving pets anyone could hope for. Please consider adopting at least one.

Katie, our 5 year young black w/white markings, greyhound has been with us for 2 1/2 years. She is really a member of the family along with a cocketeil named Tailgate. She loves the long daily walks in the forest and chasing those squirrels. Thank goodness for trees!! We had some trouble with Katie being allergic to a flea collar and flea program that caused her to have many, many petite mal seizures. Any one else run into this? If so, please e-mail me. Thanks!!! We have two dogs, Hunny, a labradore retreiver mix, and Tigger, a greyhound. Tigger was the runt of his litter, and as such was too small to race. We adopted him when he was 18 mos old. A young greyhound is a bundle of joy and energy and we can imagine life with out our little guy.

We brought home Bandit just 4 days ago and we can already see how much of a happier dog he has become. Bandit had been attacked while muzzled at the track and required 3 1/2 hours of stitching up to piece him back together once he got to Greyhound Friends of NC. That incident may have left scars on his body, but his personality doen't have any reflections of the attack. He's so gentle & sweet. We feel so lucky to have Bandit in our home. He already knows what cookie and walk mean. If anyone in the Greenville, NC area is interested in forming a playgroup please contact us via e-mail.

I worked for a national humane organization that was involved in GH rescue, and I know how wonderful they are. I can't have one in my tiny apartment right now, but hope to adopt one when I have a house. My one concern is that they may eat my cats. Is there anyone out there that has had any experience they can share on the subject? It's good to know where I can go when I'm ready to adopt! Keep up the good work.

I have two of the greatest friends in the world - Rain and Breeze. Both are rescue dogs and are some of the most gentle animals I have ever known. Anyone who likes large dogs should consider GHs. Don't be fooled. These dogs don't need a "country acre" to run. They need a soft place to curl up and be close to their human friends.

Wow!! I had no idea what this was really all about. I think that it is just great. I don't own GH, but I am a horse behavior specialist who takes in ex-race horses, and own two Doberman Pinchers who where the not at all registerable, and would have been destroyed for the lack of "quality." It really aggrivates me that humans can be so narrow minded. It is inspiring to hear of people like you all who have adopted these dogs. Maybe, some day when my horse facility is done, and I have more room for running, I would like to experience the joy of friendship from these beautiful dogs. Keep up the wonderful work!!! We have three: Jett; Tiger; and Shadow. All were adopted through the Greyhound Rescue Society in Sugar Loaf NY. Only those who have these beautiful and gentle creatures in their home can fully understand the immediate bond that forms. "Needle nose addiction". We have written to all states that still condone racing and, to U-HAUL about their ads about GH racing across some of their trucks. U-HAUL has responded favorably to pressure from adoption groups. If enough of us speak-up; we can we can bring an end to this purnicious sport!!

We adopted our first greyhound, Savannah, in 1992 through LaDonna Rhea in Indiana. We adopted our second greyhound, Honey, from another family who could not take her when they moved into a condominium outside of Chicago. They are wonderful companions (for us and to each other)! No matter how lousy a day we might have (week, month, etc), we are always met at the door with a wag and a "hug" from "the kids". The St. Louis REGAP and Greyhound Companion groups are a wonderful support and social group (for the people, too). Keep up the great work with this Website!

My family adopted Dot in June of 1996. We are convinced that adopting Dot is the best thing that we ever did. Although she had some problems with housebreaking (at first), and she seems to have a taste for furniture, we would never consider getting rid of her. Greyhounds are a breed that need patience and lots of attention because everything is new to them. If you want to adopt a retired greyhound remember, you CAN teach an old dog new tricks it just takes time. I love this page it provides me with the information I need and I can get into contact with other greyhound families for questions,etc..

I just have to say that I am fasinated by Greyhounds and Whippets. I don't have one because I already have two dogs a Belgian Turveran and a rough collie. But I'm only 14 right now so I will have to wait a few years before I can get one, even though I am dieing to get either kind. I'm not sure if I should adopt a greyhound or if I should go to a whippet breeder. My first dog, I think, would be an adopted greyhound. I would love to more information on adopting a greyhound, so if anyone can give me some information it would be much appericiated.

My retired racer (Christine, age 11) has been with me since July 1989 and has been THE BEST companion during my travels from the fields of Iowa to the hills of West Virginia, the open spaces of Texas, the Grand Canyon in Arizona and the Golden Gate bri dge in San Francisco, taking each move as well as, or better, than I have. These noble creatures are deserving of a far better fate than that which so many will ultimately meet. Keep up the good work in spreading the word about this exceptional and most deserving of breeds.

We have moved to northern Virginia southwest of D.C. and are interested in tr ading greyhound dogsitting services every once in awhile with compatible greyhound addicts in our area -- but so far we've found none. Anyone out there live near Woodbridge/Dumfries/Dale City, VA??

We adopted our bundle of joy "DOE" 3 1/2 yrs. ago. What a pleasure. Please join an organization like "Save the Greyhound Dogs" to help end the constant sufferinf these pets endure daily at the track.

I have been incredibly touched by the info. on this web site. Thanks so much! After viewing a broadcast on TV regarding the saddening situation of present greyhound treatment, I felt a need to assist in some way. I would really love to adopt one of these beautiful animals in the near future and hopefully prevent a senseless and horrific death of such a wonderful creature. Your info. is definitely making a difference...Until the greed of GH racing becomes illegal, thanks for your insightful work.
