I am considering getting a dog and would love to adopt a greyhound because they seem to be as laid back as I am(also would make my sister soooo jealous)

We adopted our first greyhound, Sierra, in June. We're hooked! We met our first greyhound in November while visiting my mother in the hospital. Two therapy greyhounds were there. It was love at first sight! I can't imagine sharing our home with any other breed.

What a win-win situation - to give a gentle, beautiful animal a loving home and a family and in turn he will make our family complete. We are planning to adopt soon and the more we find out, the more anxious we are!!

I think the idea of adoption is great! The thought of terminating these wonderful animals is appalling to me. Our dog passed away nearly 1 year ago, and our grandchildren think we need another dog. Are greyhounds good around children? We have 7 ages 10 to 9 mos. The children will love any pet we get, and I won't have a pet that doesn't love my grandchildren as they spend a lot of time with us. Thanks for the information.

Hi, I live in Paris, MO. Do you consider this too far away from your Adoption Area? I have had dogs for 32 yrs. Different breeds at different times! Basenji, Smooth Fox Terrier, GWP(1 show, hunt male at this time),Danes(1 3yr old show male at this time)Chesapeake Bay Retriever(11 yr old retired hunter, and showgirl, spayed, female at this time(I have had her since she was 12 wks old, and TECHNICALLY she "rules the roost!!"(after the Alpha, ME of course!!)) The GWP and Chessy are outside dogs(thier preference, but the 3 yr old Dane is my inside lap-dog! All are Obed. and Crate Trained, healthy, happy, current on shots, and VERY MUCH LOVED!!!! They are all my Babies!! Oh, I also have 3 2-legged over 15 yr old Kids still at home(out of 8--ALL BOYS!!) I would be interested in having a 2-5 yr old spayed Girl join our 2 & 4-legged family. We own our home and have a very small fenced yard...We do our excercising at the park, and various LARGE open places nearby...also my hubby walks Levi(the Dane) 3-4 times for 2-3 miles(good weather only!! of course!)(P.S. Hubby is partial to the Blue Color, personally I like the White with Black Spots, but temperment is much higher on the list than color!!) She MUST be able to be "Best Buds" with the Dane. Also, hubby is retired from G.M.(St. Louis Plant!!), and I work at home, so there is ALWAYS someone at home...If a necessity does arise, we take Dane with us, as we would the GH...I feel we would provide a very loving, healthy, home.

Here we are again...... We brought Mallory, an 8 year old Grey, home with us yesterday. We are going to be getting another sometime this week, a 4 year old named Blue. We were present when a rescue center received some Greys that came from the tracks. How could people not love such beautiful animals? I am playing with the idea of becoming a rescue center myself. I have an 8 acre farmette, so I do have the room. Is thier a need for rescue centers in the Harrisburg, Pa area? How would one go about becoming a rescue and adoption center?

I really enjoy keeping up with this site and I truely love our five year old greyhound, "Rocky", but has anyone else had the problem of keeping them from destroying rugs and couches?! Even though I keep Rocky's nails clipped, he's forever shredding everything he lays on! I've tried covering "his" loveseat with towels, blankets, sheepskin, but he always manages to uncover the upholstery. I know there will be those of you who just say, "Don't let him on the furniture". (and I have to say, you must not have a greyhound yet!!) Other than laying a chair across the couch, I can't keep him off it! Any tips about keeping them off the good stuff? Thanks!

Hi!! It's me again. Thanks to everyone who responded to my questions so quickly. My husband had a good laugh. I am now planning to visit a couple of adoption agencies in the coming weeks. I am getting closer to a decision thanks to the positive responces I've recieved. I was wondering if I could get an idea of what it might cost to adopt one of these noble creatures? I'm hoping it't not excessive because I am quickly falling in love.

My dog is very old and is failing, will be put down soon I am afraid. Have always been fascinated with the greyhound and the fact that many think of them as "disposable" once they are "used up". I have 3 declawed cats and a 3yr old grandson who will be moving out shortly. I'm thinking a greyhound would be a perfect dog for me. Thanks for all the information, you've helped me make up my mind.

Have a 10 yr. old chihuahua and three kids, 16, 15, 11 years, also 2 cats, declawed and in-house only (they think the chihuahua is one of them). The kids would love a larger dog and we would love another warm body in our lives. Any chance a grey would fit in? Have always thought the greyhound was a beautiful animal, but never thought I could actually have one to love for myself!

I am very interested in adopting a Greyhound. I'm having a problem convincing my husband. He thinks Greyhounds are to active to be good house pets. We have a large yard but it would basically be a companion for me. Is there any information you could send me that might help to convince him that this would be the perfect companion. There is no doubt in my mind that a Greyhound is exactly what I need.

HI! I have a question for anyone to answer that can help- I adopted "Niles" in November , and he's a GREYT dog! However, he sleeps in my room with me and has started "marking" at night in the living room and bathroom. He didn't do this for the longest time, and just started recently. Nothing in the household has changed, I take him out before bed and first thing in the morning. What can I do? I am cornering the market on carpet cleaner!!! Please provide me with advice if anyone has any!!!! thanks.

Hi again everyone! Just an added note: If you have children, I'd highly recommend the book "Ratzo - A Greyhound Rescue Story." I read it and it was wonderful. For new adopters, the book by Carolyn Raeke, "The Guide to Adopting an Ex-Racing Greyhound," is fantastic - the color photos are worth the price of the book alone! Best regards!

It is my contention that Greys make the perfect companion for nearly everyone. I'm up to three now as nobody told me of the "potato chip syndrom" after adopting my first and, "perfect" dog, the Princess. I consider my Greys as my "children," and the nice thing about it is, I always do have the last word! I should recommend everyone log on to the website: www.greyhounds.org for a real informative look at what these gentle magnificent creatures of God, at this point have to go through to become a companion...it's a true shame. To all out there...spread the word...adopt a Greyhound, a true friend for life!

Great site! We have wanted to adopt a greyhound for several years. We currently have a very frendly rottweiler and recently had our other dog put to sleep. She was a stray that had been abused and was in really bad shape when she was found. We gave her a good home for over three years. This past winter she came down with a nasty and rare infection (micro-organism) that attacked her organs, and untimately caused her liver failure. We really enjoyed having two dogs, and like our last dog, we feel strongly in rescueing adult dogs that are in need of a good home. Your site provided a lot of geat information. I will be contacting our local agency for further adoption information. I am so glad to see that there are so many agencies that now work to save these beautiful dogs! It is such a shame that so many need to be destroyed each year!

The vet said she shouldn't run flat out ever again. He put a pin in the joint. Can you direct me to further info.on that advice? My grey is 7. She has owned me for 2 years. She has developed a limp with her front left leg. The vet x-rayed and tested for valley fever. Both negative. I read in your F&Q that lameness is first sympton of bone cancer. I would like more info.

WE HAVE A WONDERFUL GREYHOUND THAT WE ADOPTED THREE YEARS AGO WHEN HE WAS 3 1/2 YEARS OLD AS A CHRISTMAS PRESENT FOR OUR DAUGHTER. HIS NAME IS PADDINGTON. HE HAS BEEN A WONDERFUL TREAT TO ALL OF US. MY HUSBAND IS ALLERGIC TO DOGS, BUT PADDINGTON DOESN'T SEEM TO BOTHER HIM. WE LOVE HIM WITH ALL OUR HEART. HE CAME WITH US FROM PENNSYLVANIA TO WASHINGTON STATE AND LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF BEING ABLE TO "GO" EVERY DAY ON THE ROAD. HE NEVER BARKS UNLESS HE DEFINITELY WANTS OUR ATTENTION AND THEN HE SURPRISES HIMSELF WITH THE NOISE. WE ARE DEFINITELY THINKING OF ADOPTING ANOTHER GREYHOUND AS A COMPANION FOR HIM NOW OUR DAUGHTER IS GOING OFF TO COLLEGE.

Jasco is an 8-yr old whom we adoped last fall. He's a wonderful dog and has really become a member of the family. I could use a bit of advice...we will be away in August and we need to find a place for him for a week while we are out of town (too far to take him with us since we are flying.) Do you have any suggestions? I hate the thought of a kennel for him. I'd appreciate any advice you can give me. Thanks!

My family add Princess, a retired racer, to our family 4 1/2 years ago! We are an Army Family in Germany and she is the best kind of dog for our type of livestyle. She is very much like a big cat and the best thing that has happened to us. She is now 7 years old and very much a importent part of our family.

We adopted a retired racer 2 1/2 yrs. ago at the age of 4 1/2. He is one of the best and most gentle dogs we have ever met. Our other dog Jasmine (lab / shep mix) helped teach him how to be a dog and have fun. I would like to do anything I can to support the cause of greyhound adoptions. Several of my friends who have met Nick are already looking into adopting a greyhound themselves. Keep up the good work!

Those of you who are "thinking" of adopting, think no more. Check with your local group and meet a Greyhound in person. You will be very glad that you did. My two, Erin and Jake are wonderful!! I have had animals all of my life, and Erin and Jake aren't like other animals. Those of you who are owned by Greys understand what I mean. My two are greyt with kids, gentle with everyone and everything, except their toys. They are fine with my cat, Sassy, and my sml. mixed breed, Bear. They are clean, odorless (except if they have an upset stomach), and shed very little. They are love sponges!! Mine stay on the floor (their choice), and have wonderful manners. They rarely bark, but do smile and try to talk. They love their walks, but don't nag, if I don't have time. They're perfect!!Again, those of you that have Greys will understand. They are big, but don't seem to take a lot of space, as they are in their beds sleeping a lot. A suggestion for those who aren't sure if they want to adopt, volunteer with a local group and see for yourself how wonderful Greyhounds are.
