Got to brag a little about our Conor. Our local SPCA had its annual fund-raising walk today. Besides raising $76 in pledges, Conor won the "Best Vocals" at their amatuer dog show for the fourth time in five years (we missed last year's walk). Conor is a tremendous howler and he really entertained the crowd with his golden pipes today. Another blue ribbon! He may have not been much of a racer, but he's one heck of a singer.

Saw your ad at the Atlanta Airport this morning! What a nice find. We just adopted our second greyhound last month - a nearly nine year old male who had been living in a vet clinic for 5 years as a blood donor. Greyhounds are universal blood donors, which lends credence to their being the oldest of breeds!! Our first - a 5 yr old female - is the love of our lives. These are the best pets in the world!

Hi! I have two greyhounds, adopted from the National Greyhound Adoption Program in Phila. Jack is a 4 year old black male with prominent"buck"teeth. He is sweet, frisky, loyal and very protective of me. Troy is a 2 year old white and brindle ticked male. He is sensitive and a little shy, but very friendly. He does the "greyhound smile" and sleeps on his back(with only his legs straight up in the air. What a sight! I volunteer at the meet and greets and would love to meet people from my area and anywhere else to talk hounds!!

May 2, 1998 will be the 1st anniversary of our adoption of the 3 year old grayhound that we lovingly named Gomer. Boy, it has been a greyt year. He is a white and brindle with a wonderful mask. He really has changed our lives. He will get his Heartworm test tomorrow. It has been such a warm winter here that the mosquitos are already feasting. We got Gomer from the local dog pound. He never made it to the GAP rescue. So we had a real kennel dog. Now his main job is to make sure that the sofa does not leave the living room. The dry skin can be cleaned up with a medicated shampoo and lots of brushing, and some oil in the diet. We had the same problem.

Hi!!: When I adopted ISIS in December she had very dry skin. I tried some 'Derm...' something - pills from the vet - did no good. I was told by the woman through whom I adopted the dog to add wheat germ oil to her diet - starting with a few drops, gradually going up to almost a teaspoon - no more!!! I have been doing this since March 4th. and I see an improvement. I was warned that too much oil - too quickly can cause loose stools. I had no problem with this particular dog - but I increased VERY slowly.

I am also experiencing very dry skin with my grey. she is also shedding terribly. When we got her about 3 months ago, she had a very thick coat, which leads me to believe she was kept somewhere that was very cool. She is now starting to lose that coat, and we have hair all over. I this normal for a grey, or should I be concerned that there might be other problems. Her health seems fine otherwise. Please let me know of any advice or suggestions you may have. Thanks

Would like to thank Sue for her suggestions regarding Hailey's shyness with men and we are working on that. Does anyone have suggestion to help with dry skin? I've tried Avon-Skin-so-Soft and do not want to and oil to her diet as she has stomach problems. I know some of this can be stress related but after bringing her home from a 3 day stay with the vet her skin is drier than ever.

Fourteen months ago I adopted a greyhound named San, which I loved very much. I have Asthma, and was told after placeing remarks on my medication that I could have a Greyhound without a problem. Well to make a long story short,I am one of a very rare few that cam be infected with a becterial infection. Haveing Asthma it caused me to almost die. My heart rate went up to 170 and placed in hospital on oxygen for sox days on CCU. I asked the Doc what happened and he told me. So my beloved Sam was placed ina new hone in Monson, Mass. Why I wrote this is because if anybody starts getting weak and shallow breathing, this could be there problem.

Thanks so much to all of the kind people that responded to a novice with great information on greyhounds as a possible pet for our family. I got good information and recommendations from most. It may be that a greyhound is not for us but the only way to know is to ask questions and do research before making such an important decision for both the family and the dog. Unfortunately,I was rather disappointed with the one man who responded very rudely, called me a moron and insinuated that I should be shot. Again, my gratitude to those who responded positively with useful information that will help us make a wise decision for all concerned. The vast majority of you are doing a great job as greyhound advocates!

Hi Fellow Greyhound Lovers,
I have a 9-yr. old black male named George who is a darling old gentleman and works as a pet therapist at our local hospitals. When he sees someone in a wheelchair, he immediately thinks they need his head in their lap.
I also recently adopted a 2-yr. old red-fawn male named Bullet. He is a true "spook"--terrified of everything and everyone but me. We're working on socialization, but it's been slow going. If anyone knows any magic tricks, please forward them. Somewhere in there there is a sweet lovable hound too afraid to come out!!!

I was adopted by Rosy (a.k.a. Monroe Episode) last July. She just celebrated her 4th birthday with a slightly modified version of "3 Bean Salad". She loves her vegies!! Rosy has captured the hearts of everying in the neighborhood and especially her "sister", Bingo, an Australian Blue Heeler. They have their own mini races in the back yard. Rosy does everything she can to make me laugh and when I do, she "attacks" me with kisses. What a love! I am extremely thankful for the people at Mid-South Greyhound in West Memphis Arkansas and to Liann and Bill of Rescued Racers in St. Louis for "paving the way" for Rosy and I. If you are thinking of adopting, do your reading, go to the events, and DO IT! You'll never have one regret.

I'm seriously considering adopting a retired racing greyhound. I live at home with my parents and my cat. We all enjoy dogs and have had them in the past. The backyard is fenced in and it's a large area. I take brisk and long walks most days of the week. My situation is that I'll soon be moving to an apartment. Do you feel this is right to have a greyhound in an apartment and especially since I'll be working all day?

He is very affectionate, sleeps with us and our 17lb, 11 yr old cat, Shawnee. Shane came to us 7 mos after we lost our 17 yr old poodle, Alex. He loves attention from the neighborhood kids! Going for rides in the car & visiting the Pet Store are his favorite treats. He is such a joy and so well-behaved.

a greyhound is the right companion for our household. We

Now that I am a few years away from early retirement, I

I am researching adopting a greyhound. I have a 5 year old son who is VERY active as well as two cats about 16 years old (adopted about 15 years ago). One of the cats is pretty skittish around my son. Do the "wireless" fences with collars work for greyhounds or is the collar a problem? Can you get hounds that have already received some training? Can they learn to live with old cats or will they chase them when they play? Adopting a greyhound sounds attractive, but I myself am not much of a dog person. My son and husband want a dog. My experience with adopting my cats was very pleasant because they had been in foster homes before we got them and there was a "profile" on their personality, etcetera when we were selecting them. Is it possible for them to be outside only dogs? Thanks for any information!

Hi. I'm a high school student who loves animals. I already have two cats and a pet rat. These animals are in my care and never are neglected. Recently with a vet program I am in I went to a college open house, where there were adoption agencies and a lot of owners with their greyhounds. I never have really thought about owning a greyhound but I have always wanted a dog to help me remember to EXERCISE! At the open house I petted the greyhounds there and thought they were really great dogs. Then on the way home I read through the material that I had picked up and was very sad about the facts that they had about the dogs being killed at such a young age. When I got home I looked in detail and have been on the internet reasearching the responsobilities of being a first time adopter. My dad does not like dogs enough to get one on his own, but he did say I could maybe convince him. I have enough money to adopt one, buy a crate and get the other essential things. Our yard is also fenced except at the driveway and very large. I have time to walk him before school and after, and could get my parents to take him out of the house a little while during lunch. They are always in the house during the day. Please e-mail me and tell me if my dreams are far-fetched or if the posibilities of my owning a greyhound are high? I would also like any specific info that might be helpful!
Thanks a lot, and sorry for taking so much space!

A follow up on my foster grey Vista from march. She is still very scared of men.(any suggestions?) But things are slowly getting better. so far does n't like cats when they move around."picked" one up and both survived.
I'm taking her everywhere so she can get used to strangers, she doesn't trust anyone but me and all dogs.
Our residents at the nursinghome love her,but are disappointed that she does not walk up to them.Maybe someday. She very happy to go there every day, loves to drive in the car and sleep. At work she follows me around or lays down in the lobby and watches
everything. she is very curious about what is goning on all day.

we get a male, as they would be the best with the kids. I've read the book Adopting the Racing Greyhound. And I think we are ready, and from the comments I've read here, it's moved us a little closer. I would like to find out, though, what other people
's experience with young children and Greyhounds has been. From what I've read, this seems to be the perfect dog!!! I would also like to get involved as a volunteer in my area. Any suggestions?

WE'VE ADOPTED "GET AROUND", ROUNDY FOR SHORT. SHE IS THE BEST DOG. SHE LISTENS BETTER THAN KIDS DO. SHE GOES FOR RIDES WITH US AS MUCH AS SHE CAN. I AM VERY GLAD WE ADOPTED HER FROM GREYHOUND COMPANIONS OF ELKART INDIANA.

I just found your web site and I love it! I'm really enjoying the All About Greyhound site and I like the On the Farm series. I've been looking for information on these greyt dogs and I found it. Keep up the great job, Jim and (Qui

Thanks to everyone who answered my query about greys and cats. I'm wondering now if anyone has experience withgreys and camping? My fiance and I are planning to by a small trailer and want to be able to take our grey with us.

I have a 7 year old greyhound, Lexy. I adopted her fours years ago. She is the greatest pet. She is cuddly and funny and sooo sweet. I made a great choice when I chose to adopt a greyhound.

I am looking forward to adopting a greyhound! They seem like such wonderful companions to share time with. I am reading all I can to be as informed as possible before going through with the adoption, but I think both the hound and
I will be pleased.
