We would love to adopt a greyhound, but worry about how the new addition to our home will affect our spoiled rotten 4-year-old cat. Is there anyone who can share a similar experience and offer advice?

Hello, I found you by entering "Fibrocartilagenous Emboli" on a search engine. I have two retired racing greyhounds, and one has just been diagnosed with possible "FCE". I see you have an article about it in your Fall 1998 Issue and would like to receive it and suscribe for future ones.
However, when I tried to fill out you order form, it did not work. Please, please e-mail me or call me at 619-281-5050, so I can order it. Also, if there is any way I could have you send me a copy (or e-mail) of that one article, I would appreciate it greatly. I don't know how long I'll have to wait for the subscription to start
and yours is the only possible info I have seen available.
Thank you for your time and help!

This is a wonderful net site. I have a 4 year old brindle female greyhound named "Kitty's Grace". She is very gentle with my cats and my two small dogs, Dutchess and Dolly. Greyhounds make excellent pets and I am truly grateful to have her; she has brought me much joy.

My husband and I adopted a brindle female from Homes for Greyhounds in September 1998. Her name is Maya. She has been a great addition to our family. We already had a black Lab, Nigel. The two are best friend now. We had already put a deposit down on another Lab, but cancelled to adopt Maya. I am so happy I've been able to have a Greyhound in my life.

We say that it took getting a cat to teach our grey to be a dog. She is so laid back and easy going that I can completely trust her with my 2 small children and my 2 cats. We have had her for one year and I want more, but I think my home could be a bigger help by fostering dogs for placement. How can I get involved in that?

Hi, everyone.I left a comment a few weeks ago about having to spend
several thousand £'s. to buy a bigger car for the dog,& I was pleased
to recieve a few e-mails in response.As a committed Greyhound fan, &
being a member of the only charity rescue organisation in the
Lancaster (UK) area, I wanted to pass on the story of Lizzy-Lou.
Lizzy-Lou,(as she was named by the kennel staff),was not an
ex-racer,but was picked up as a stray by our local dog warden, & saved
by the kennel manageress, who visits the pound regularly (strays get 7
days before being put to sleep),& arrived at the kennels in poor
shape. Her right eye has been displaced outwards & forwards by about
1/4 of an inch, as a result of being hit over the head very
hard. Further investigation revealed the same "caring" owner had also
kept her in a small shed with almost no roof, with no proper
bedding, did not feed her regularly,& generally beat her, just to
"encourage" her to chase & catch rabbits (which supplemented her
meagre diet).Despite all this, she still craved human companionship,
& was given, if not in abundance, by the staff as time allowed.
The Happy ending to this tale is that she has now been re-homed
with a loving family, & as I write this, with a genuine tear in my eye,
has settled in well, & should have a happy life.
Sorry if I have gone on so long, but thanks for readingthis, & good
luck for the future.
P.S. A story appeared in the Press over here a Couple of weeks ago
about a greyhound that was "got rid of" because it failed to
win, show,or place in its' first races,& was rescued by someone who
some months later decided to enter the dog in some races "for the hell
of it", & it won its first 3 races! Says a lot about the breed doesn't
it?

Hi! I love your website! I want to adopt a greyhound this spring. (I have to re-arrange rooms in my house and work a bit on the backyard first before I get my dog.) I can't wait! I have to admit, though, that I'm a bit nervous. I hope my dog likes me. I'm single and I enjoy hiking and camping and hope my greyhound does too! I have a fenced-in backyard so I'm all set in that respect. After I get my dog and we get to know each other well, I want to help out with some of the adoption groups. I live in Michigan, 16 miles southwest of Detroit. I'm also interested in my dog and I getting into the Therapy Pet program - I have a 91 year-old aunt in a nursing home and I'd love to take my greyhound around to visit the patients - all those people look so lonely. I'm also interested in agility - that really looks like fun! Thanks for your information and website.

Bonnie came to live with me about a year and a half ago. I cannot imagine a dog more suited to my personality and lifestyle. She is very quiet, but acts quite silly when you know what to look for! I also have two cats, Sweet Jane and Buckaroo Bonsai. Recently, Buckaroo has become very protective of Bonnie and now comes with us when we do the morning stroll around the neighborhood. Jane (the queen bee of the house) continues to be a little testy. Bonnie is the best!

Back in 1989, My then 2-year-old GSD, Max, was suffering
from loneliness, boredom and separation anxiety. I adopted
a beautiful, sweet 3-year-old blue female greyt named
Willow from a local shelter as a companion for him. For
almost ten years, we played, hiked, and traveled together,
until Willow died of cancer this past January. The
relationship between Max and Willow was nothing short of
miraculous. She absolutely idolized him, and he was big
brother, hero and protector to her. Both Max and I miss
her deeply, and I am now in the process of finding another
greyhound to replace her (but never to take her place).

Hello, I heard about the treatment of Greyhounds on the T.V. this morning. I was sad to hear that many greyhounds are sold to labs for testing of makeup/drugs, and I was horrified that Greyhounds are sold in Mexico, thrown off boats as live bait for sharks. My current situation does not allow an adoption of a Greyhound, but I am interested in finding out more about your organizations and whether any organizations are up and running in Canada. These sites are heartwarming and the pictures are great. Greyhounds are beautiful dogs.

I am very excited about your site. It was well put together and very informative.
I do not currently own a Greyhound due to space constraints. However, I hope to be able
to provide one of these wonderful creatures a loving home in the next few years.
I am always looking for more info on these lovable guys!!
I was wondering about the calendars. It said the '99 calendars were sold out.
Is it too early to put my name down for the '00 calendar?
What is the cost? I think this is a good way to introduce others in the office setting
or school setting about these dogs and the homes currently needed. So if you have any info
on the calendars, please let me know.
Thanks!

Hi,
Your dogs are beautiful and I have enjoyed visiting your site. My husband and I volunteer with the humane society of fairfax county and have had the pleasure of meeting some of the people who have adopted greyhounds, through greyhound rescue, and their wonderful dogs.
We are searching for a breed we would not be allergic to, but have so far, after trying poodles, terriers and schnauzers, been unsusccesful We are now thinking about greyhounds, not onlyl because we know people who have allergies and are able to own greyhounds, but because they are wonderful dogs.
We read that they are very prone to bloat, and cannot use standard flea and tick preventitives such as top spot.
Is this true and if so, how do you prevent bloat and flea and tick infestations?
Thank you.

My husband and I just got a 6 year old hound. We had intended to adopt when we first got married last year, but we were in an apartment then, and the manager told the agency that greys were over the weight limit for our complex. When we moved into a house, one of the first things we decided to do was go back to the agency to find our newest family member. We've only had her 2 days, but we are both in love with her already! Her name is Sheila. She raced as 'Checkered Title'. We got her from the Mid-South Greyhound Adoption Option, Inc. in West Memphis, AR.

We just adopted our second Greyhound last week. We adopted the first one almost eight years ago when we were first married, young, foolish and already the owners of a Great Dane/Saint Brenard cross and a Welsh Corgi. What in the world did we need with another dog? It was one of the the best decision we ever made.
The other two dogs have since died and we added a Dachshund and a new Dane. Sadly the Dane was killed in an accident and we began the process of looking for a pal for our aging Aspen who had never lived without the company of another large dog. She was so depressed it made US even sadder than we already were.
We were able to contact Jody Starosick in Colorado Springs and she was fantastic. On Friday, March 12, 1999 Sid came to join our family. It's like he's always been there. We can't imagine not having him around. Even our two year old daughter looks for him first thing in the morning.
Of all the dogs I've had in my life, and there have been many from my childhood until now at age thirty-one, I have never know a sweeter, more gentle, more loyal or more grateful breed than the greyhound. Greyhound Rescue does a service not only to the dogs, but to those of us who love them. Thank you all so much.

I am the adoring human of one Lucia di Lammermooch, formerly "Tiny Torch" at the Hinsdale, NH racetrack- she is going on 12 now and is as gracious as ever in accomodating the changes we keep making in our lives. She just enjoyed her annual running free in the the snow event- is in good health (except for her teeth, which aren't great)...and the only thing that I can imagine that would be better than having a greyhound is having more thaqn one greyhound- although at present we don't have a big enough living room for additonal couches...!

My husband and I have two dogs of different breeds. One is a 4 yr old beagle/lab, and the other is a 2 yr old Rottweiler. We saw a show on animal planet about greyhound rehab centers and thought "what a wonderful idea." I would love to adopt a retired greyhound, however right now we are living in an apartment because we recently moved here. Can anyone tell me how greyhounds get along with other dogs? We plan on building a home with alot of fenced in space for our kids (our dogs are our kids)to run around and not get into trouble. Our Rott is VERY friendly and loves other animals and kids , however she doesn't like to run as much as the beagle/lab so we need an avtive companion for our little dog. Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

I actaully just wrote a entry yesterday, but this site is very addictive to the greyhound lover. As I mentioned before I have a 5 year old greyhound FAWN. She is the most wonderful thing in your family. Her presence around the house makes it fill with unconditional love. I have just read some of your poems and they brought tears to my eyes. Being a owner of a greyhound snd thinking of burying your best bud a home makes you think " I just cant imagine what I'd do without her. after a bad day I come home and she brightens me up with her ears perking up!!! She means the world to us and I just cant imagine what we'd do without her..... I just cant imagine.....

Hello again - I have written before about our adopted (four months ago) 7 yr. old black male ex-racer, Sammy. I wondered if anyone out there adopted a dog who took a long time to adjust? At first he seemed to just be confused and we thought he'd loosen right up. He did start playing with furry toys, loving his walks, etc., and gets along pretty well with our small 10-yr old female terrier. However, it almost seems that he is regressing; he is afraid of everyone who comes in the house and runs to his crate. Also, he has started peeing on our furniture (just (we think) the chairs where my husband and I each sit in the evening!)(we are watching him closely constantly now, and so far so good - but why after all that time?) The latest thing is that he wants to stay in his crate or in a dark bedroom as soon as we are both home from work, instead of staying in the room with us. At first we let him go - but now feel we should block off the room, so he can get used to being with us again, as we are afraid he will become more withdrawn. I know racing for 6 yrs (so they told us) must have been very difficult; maybe he even is missing it in a strange way, and all this must seem very odd to him. Anyway, if anyone has had a greyhound like this, who takes a long time to "warm up"', please drop me a line! I could use a little encouragement and hope that all will be well! I am taking an early retirement in a few weeks, so will be home for awhile and plan to take him to obedience training - hope that helps!! Hope to hear from someone!

I was browsing through your Website today and was really missing our greyhound, Lindy. We adopted her in October, 1989. She was diagnosed with bone cancer this past September and we had to put her to sleep in October. That was one of the saddest times of my life. She gave us 9 years of much love and lots of fun. She was a wonderful dog--part of the family. In the Spring, we are planning to adopt another one. Greyhounds are simply wonderful!

My 16 yr. old daughter talked me into him. He was to be for her. He has turned out to be a gift to myself...the son I never had...the joy he has brought to my life is immeasurable! I thought they were the silliest looking dogs BUT that was classic " contempt prior to investigation ". We adopted our red brindle two yr. old greyhound Lampy for Christmas 1998. My husband wanted a walking companion, I wanted a very affectionate pet, and we both especially were looking for a dog that would fit into our household and family, which includes our five yr. old grandson Jacob and our two yr. old granddaughter Mikaylee. She is all we were hoping for, and more. She is admired by all of our friends & neighbors, loves the children, and in addition to all she gives to us we are happy in knowing that we have saved her from whatever might have befallen her if we had not adopted her. We would encourage anyone looking for a gentle and sweet companion dog to consider adopting a greyhound.

I am a Board Member with a private not-for-profit animal rescue. In our area we frequently see a large # of certain breed such as black labs, hounds, and pit bull mixes. We have never had a greyhound come thru our organization, I am sure there would be great interest in our adopting community for greyhounds as they are relatively rare here. I may contact a greyhound rescue here in Missouri and see if we might be able to help someone find a home. Thanks for the info.

We adopted my first ex-racer last July, Clonbony Fire, a large black male, who had been dumped at an animal shelter. At first he had no personality having been in kennels for four months. Seven months on and he is a happy bouncy four year old who loves furry toys (not live ones!). Four months ago we adopted a white and brindle bitch, Dot To Dot, five years old. They get on brilliantly, have been to obedience training and love to explore everything while out and about. We had never considered Greyhounds as pets, but we are so pleased to have these two. We are doing our bit to help other Greyhounds waiting for new homes by taking a couple out for a walk each weekend. Keep up the good work!!

Hello from Isis, Gunner and Dorothy in Oyster Bay, New York. We have trouble in Paradise. All of a sudden these two have started chewing things when they are left alone in the house. Until recently I could go out to do errands and find very little out of place. Gradually, they are getting more and more inventive in chewing up things. The most recent was two remote control devices for the TV and VCR. I wonder if this is Sight Hound spitefulness - a friend of mine had a Saluki that would steal things to show that he didn't want her to go out without him. Any ideas out there? In reaction I lock Gunner in his crate and leave Isis in the kitchen. I hesitate to leave them loose together in case a scrap develops in the confines of one room. I feel badly, but plastic is not good for the insides of dogs, and Universal Remotes are expensive. Otherwise they are wonderful. Frustrated - Dorothy V.

He came to us at the age of 4 and is now nearly 12, and we won`t miss any year of his companionship. We love the noble and gentle way he is. We are fighting in Germany against the legalisation of professionell dogracing. Maybe we can get some help for this from you,or we help you if its possible. What a wonderful scheme, many years ago, I was teaching
in a high school, one of the pupils spent his spare time
walking greyhounds. I helped him choose a name for a
new dog. In time she was found not to be a champion, so the
inevitable was about to happen. I took the dog home,
reluctantly but she became a wonderful companion, gentle
elegant and gracious. Thankfully I went to live in the country
where she could run freely. When I go back to live in the
country I will adopt a greyhound again and enjoy seeing
a free spirit running

We have met some really nice people through all of the area organizations. We can't tell you how much love and affection these dogs give you - you will just have to get one and see for yourself. We want to say THANK YOU to all of the Greyhound organizations and their adoptees for saving many greys' lives.

Do you hear from ex-racer owners in the UK?
I have a small black/white bitch who is about 4 yrs old and was rescued by one of our local rescue organisations. She was found straying with a nast shoulder wound. She has been with us for 5 months now and we love her to bits!
