We love dogs. We have had as many as 6 at one time. The one thing I can't understand is why you must have a fenced in yard. We live on ten acres and none of our dogs have ever run away. We would love to adopt. However, we cannot fence in 10 acres and there is plenty of room for a dog to run without leaving the place. Is there any hope we can ever adopt a greyhound?

Your organization is the most wonderful organization that brings tears to my eyes each and everytime I read one of your stories. Our family is very interested in adopting a grey. We are presently going through family meetings to discuss what it would mean to have a wonderful addition to the family. Our dicussions have included how we can offer a loving, nurturing retirement for what we know from our reading your websites to be a beautiful companion and family member. We do have the contact name in Nova Scotia, Canada and will be making contact in the very near future. Keep up the wonderful work. You are doing an incredible job.

I enjoyed your page so much, thank you for creating it. My husband and I have wonderful family members, Jack a fawn male,Genee a brindle female and Jill a fawn female who lost her battle with cancer last year. We thought we could never love another greyhound after Jill was gone until we found Genee. She looks nothing like Jill but a little voice inside of us said, "She need's you". Both of us then realized Jill had a wonderful life with us and it was up to us to get a new sister for her brother Jack and to save another one of her friends, and so we adopted Genee. The greatest gift I ever received was the gift of love from my family of Greyhounds.

When my husband & I were first married we were introduced to greyhounds at the local PetCo's meet-n-greet. It was decided then when we buy a house we'll make sure it has a big fenced in yard for our greyhound. Now, seven years later "Thar be hounds in the yard, Captain." Power & Eli live with us and 1 iguana and 4 ferrets. (Although, they all have their own areas. They both were adopted thru Midwest Greyhound Adoption in Sugar Grove. Illinois. I host my own meet-n-greet and local pet stores where Power & Eli are ambassadors for their breed. I loved your site. It is very informative and fun. I will definitely visit again.

One of my brother's friends found a greyhound wandering the streets near our house in Lakewood, CA. He immediately took it to my mom, since he couldn't keep a dog then. After looking for the owner unsuccessfully, we kept "Tiger" for many more years. After his death, my mother decided she couldn't live without a greyhound, and adopted "Eric the Red", formerly "Brown-Eyed Winner" of Mexican racetrack fame. He is now 13 1/2 years old, with heart failure, but otherwise still eating whole boxes of See's candy off the top of the TV, and anything else he can reach that's not locked up or locked down. He's definately the alpha partner between he and "Sweetie Baby," the german shephard dog my mother has had for 8 years. Long life to both!

I first became acquainted with greyhounds at an open-air performance of a Gypsy Traveling Theatre Group that had come to town by horse-drawn carriage all the way from Vancouver, British Columbia to Berkeley, California, where their theatre/music performance took place. During intermission my son and I went outside the gigantic tent and, to our surprise, found a huge family of dogs that looked related and were also part of the theatre entourage. The man in charge of the dogs told us that we were seeing four or five generations of what he called 'lerches'. These dogs were greyhounds of a particular color configuration: beige/brown/bright yellow stripes. We met at close range a grandmother, a mother and a litter of puppies. Beautiful animals! The man said that this particular breed of greyhound had originally come to the New World from Hungary. Never again have I seen dogs like these 'lerches'! However, a particular color configuration of greyhound comes very close. Three years ago I lost my dearly beloved canine companion named Ibizaga. She was not an Ibizan hound as her name would suggest. She was a blue-merle Australian Queensland heeler or cow-herding dog. Ibizaga would often behave like an alpha female, was totally territorial, totally loyal to me and protective of my children, and a very fast runner. She was blue-merle, with speckled short-hair, and with very blue eyes -- a beautiful dog. Now that Ibizaga is gone and time has passed I find myself thinking about inviting another canine companion to join me. I am exploring the possibility of saving a greyhound. Just the other day I met two sister greyhounds in the park and they were delightful. My only hesitation is related to exercise. Do greyhounds require frequent running on a daily basis? Before I move ahead with my 'greyhound plan' I just want to make sure that I do all the necessary research and that I am able to provide the right kind of environment for the greyhound. I am happy to have found this Greyhound Database. Thanks an awful lot!

We are hoping to adopt a greyhound very soon. any suggestions for a first time adopter as to which sex how old etc? We had to have our little dog of fifteen years put to sleep a year ago and do not want to say good-bye so soon to another good friend. Although we have given some thought to a senior with a younger dog. We just want a dog and soon. We have two cats. One looks like a bunny in regards to her coloring. The other one is white with black on his back. He resembles a black and white greyhound in his markings. These are our only requirements--the hounds must be cat safe!

What a great site. It really gets you when you read some of the comments in the guestbook. We first adopted a dog from our local rescue center about 5 years ago- a German Shepherd/Huskey cross. We thought we had the best `rescue' dog ever, until last year when we were persuaded to re-home an ex racing greyhound bitch called Penny. The family loved her but I was sceptical. I was wrong! We now have the two best rescue dogs. They love each other and Penny is the most affectionate dog I have ever known. Strange thing about her is that she loves cats and other small animals. She's only three years old and was retired because she refused to chase. We,ve also found that if she really runs, she overreaches and splits the skin on the back of her front legs. She's also growing her fur back nicely. I don't know if the same thing occurs in the states but over here many professional greyhound owners let their dogs sleep on concrete floors which are covered with dog urine. This not only wears the dogs fur away bur the uric acid burns their skin. Some of the dogs never regain their fur. Finally, I would recommend sharing your home with a greyhound to anyone. Until you have lived with one you can't understand how different they seem to other dogs. Our GS/H cross, Muttley, is also wonderful-I have to say that or he gets jealous. Keep up the good work. Will visit again. Thanks. Paul.

We've been waiting for two years to finally settle down enough ourselves to be able to adopt a greyhound. The CBC news did a special on the Southern Ontario adopt-a-greyhound society, and that got us interested. We're in the Maritimes now and just this past weekend found out where the association here is...our other (smaller, but fast) dog Katie needs a friend...and hopefully, soon she'll have one.

After many years of living with my son and his wife, their 3 daughters plus 3 dogs and 7 cats, they finally bought a house of their own and moved - we were sorry to see them go but happy for them to have their own place - but it left us dogless! we still had 2 cats but no dogs. so after many years of wanting one the elegant beasties, we finally got a greyhound of our own - Maggie - a 2+ year old red brindle who is the sweetest thing on 4 feet that we have ever shared a house with. we ahve ahd her for a little over 2 months and every day is a new discovery of delight. she came to us not knowing how to climb stairs, not knowing how to play, not even wagging her tail - and you should see her now - her tail goes so fast whe looks like a cowboy getting ready to rope a calf - she levitates up and down the stairs and kisses us good night and good morning each day. I cannot tell people enough how great it is to share you life with a greyhound - even our two cats rub up against her and get a kiss in return - I do believe we need another greyhound!

I'm a greyhound lover who lost her greyhound 3 years ago, tragically. He went out and somehow slipped on the ice or hit a brance and broke a rib that punctured his lung. He was a sweet soul who I will never forget. I am thinking about getting another one soon as we are moving and will live closer to work. Love your site. They deserve all the love they can get and never fail to return it.

I love stopping by to read all these messages! We have been owned by our greyhound, Eli, for almost 3 years. Eli is an 80 pound, red fawn male and is the light of my life. Eli is the perfect animal... he is completely trust worthy in our house 8 hours a day while we are at work. He is respectful of our 3 cats and foster kittens, and is a wonderful friend to our black lab and our terrier mix. Eli comes camping with us and is welcome at all of our friend's houses. We'll never be without a greyhound again!

I heard about retired greyhounds originally two years ago after reading an article in a California paper. Irvine, CA keeps retired GH for blood transfusions for one year. If you are thinking about adopting one of their dogs, they ask that you volunteer your time at their location and get to know the dogs and pick a good match that way. The dogs are treated royally and the new owners are completely aware of what they are getting into. After two years I am still longing for a greyhound. I've since moved to Illinois and I work full time. Would it be too cruel to leave them home alone all day? I was thinking of possibly adopting two in that case. I would really like some feedback. This is a wonderful web site! I so enjoyed reading all about this wonderful breed.

Thanks to your website I located Greyt Rescues, Lafayette, IN (I live in Indianapolis). Tammi Nice lived up to her name and more - I now have a 3-1/2 year old boy, Wally (Wicked Wink). He is my shadow, and I love him ever so much. In less than 2 years I'll retire from legal secretarying and we can keep each other company even more. Yes, those big brown eyes do melt your heart, and I am determined to make his life with me the easiest he's ever had it for as long as he wants me. Many thanks again for leading me to Wally - he'll always be a winner at my house!

What a wonderful and infomartive site! Our family is very seriously interested in adopting a retired greyhound. Your site offers alot of information but there has got to be a negative side that must be considered. Although we as a family are homebodies ourselves, both parents work and one concern we have is leaving the dog alone for up to 8 hours a day alone. This obstical has kept us from persuing a dog adoption in the past. Can greyhounds be happy being alone for long periods during the day and having attention in the evenings and weekends? What are some of the drawbacks and things for us to consider when adopting a retired racer? What kind of problems can we anticipate and prepare for in advance? Any advice and insight would be greatly appreciated to educate our family. Thanks for the wonderful web site.

My Friend Sherrie Crissman's "Grey" just died on Sunday, January 31. She is the Venango County Chairperson in PA. This is truly devastating to her and I thought you all should know what she is going through. She has one other dog, another grey named Grant. She could really use your support right now. I believe some of you will know who Sherrie is, especially Erie and Wheeling. Myself and my husband will be attending Sherrie and her husband, Jim, either 2/5 or 2/12 to do the best we can to bring "Grant" another partner/friend home. We are worried about him being alone. He is missing his buddy terribly. If anyone who receives this message knows the Crissmans, please send a card, can't give any other info about them as they do not have a computer. Please help my friends get over their loss. Thank you.

I have two retired racers, Xena (Ace Rapture) and Roger (Travelin Rogers). Both were adopted from the Arizona Adopt A Greyhound Association in Phoenix. I've owned several different breeds of dog in my life but none more loving and gentle than a greyhound. If you're considering adopting one, you won't be disappointed and don't be surprised if you find yourself going back for seconds (like we did 6 months after bringing Xena home).

My Husband and I adopted our "Son" in June of 98. Needless to say we are crazy about our boy. We had adopted an elderly dog (a couple at work lost there home and they put her in the local shelter, which they were going to put her "down" because of her age. We felt very bad for her. How anybody can have an animal for 11 years and making no attempt to adopt her out could have done that to her.) Unfortunately Moira died 14 months later of a stroke. We felt good about saving a life - and that was our ultimate goal. A friend at work said, "Lin, why don't you adopt a greyhound. Like a lot of people I really didn't know that much about them. I did some research and put in for the adoption. His racing name was "Red" being that he's a red fawn color. We named hime "Chance" (for second change). He is the most precious, gentle, sweetest animal in the world. I have 6 cats and he's great with them. Very maternal. Likes ears and butts! I'm very grateful to have him in our lifes. I'm hooked. I'm trying to convince my husband into adopting another one. We'll see. I tell everyone about the abuse of greyhound racing. It's amazing how it's so much in the dark about what happens to some of these beautiful creatures. They really are gorgeous dogs. Take care and keep up the good work!

In January of 1996 my family adopted our first greyhound. We were told his name was "Igor", but his wonderful spirit soon found him a new name..Dasher -- in honor of both his wonderful ability for speed and our wonderful love of the Holiday Season (think reindeer!). The Friday evening we brought him home was the beginning of the great Blizzard of 1996. It snowed so much that it shut down the state of New Jersey. With no school and no work, Dasher and I bundled up and took many long walks. He absolutely loved the snow! He even stood patiently while I shoveled an elderly woman's sidewalk and porch so that she could safely open her front door. During his time with us, Dasher blossomed into a wonderful friend. Why he had been named "Igor" was apparent to others -- he had scars on his face, a bald spot on his shoulder, nearly no hair on his chest, belly and bottom, and 1/4 of his right ear was gone. To us, Dasher was the most beautiful dog in the world, because his beauty was on the inside. Dasher spent his time with us making us laugh and teaching us what love truely is. Unfortunately, we lost Dasher to kidney failure in November of 1997. He was put to sleep at our vet's office and passed away in my arms. It snowed that day, as it had on the day he came to us. Two years later, in the fall of 1999, I decided that it was time that I share Dasher's story with the world. While I was compiling information about greyhounds that would be useful to potential greyhound adopters, I came across the site for Greyhound Adoption Service in Salisbury, Mass. As a family, we decided that it was time to once again be owned by a greyhound. We traveled to the kennel over Thanksgiving weekend. Then came the dilemma...do we adopt a grown greyhound or one of the puppies from a recently rescued litter? Well, I couldn't imagine leaving without "Andy" -- he stole my heart. The puppy, however, seemed like a wonderful opportunity -- and her mother was a sweetie. Needless to say, we are now proudly owned by TWO GREYT GREYS. Andy is now "Prancer" and the puppy is "Vixen" (more reindeer names in honor of Dasher). It is positively the most rewarding experience of my life. For anyone who would like to know more about my greys and read their stories..my page can be found at http://members.aol.com/fishgirl79/greyhound.html
