Thank you for your informative web site. My family and I want to adopt a greyhound in the fall of this year (2000), so I'm doing my homework now. We lost our beloved cat, Harri, last June and want to fill his void with an animal that we can love as well as rescue from being destroyed. A greyhound owner I know from Montreal, Canada, joked that his companion "is like a cat." And from what I've read so far, we are the perfect home for a retired greyhound sans the litter box! All kidding aside, I am excited about the opportunity to bring one of these remarkable animals into our mellow, loving home. In the meantime, I'll be a regular visitor to your wonderful web site!

I found your web page very interesting. Now, I know many thinks that I was looking for. I have 7 months old female who is mixture of greyhound (mom) and chart polski (dad). She is realy loving dog. Nea (her name) is fawn beautiful girl with white socks and white spots on her forehead and tail. She is very independent and smart dog. Since she was 4 months old we have attended to special puppy obidience training. We had some problems about who is the leader but now it is the past. After reading your tips about feeding I think that she is a littel too skiny. When you look at her you can see all her ribs, vertebrae and hips bones. Even she is in good condition, in my opinion, sometimes she can eat nothing for 3 days. I feed her with rice, kasha, bread or cerals with vegetables and chicken, veal or beaf meat. In the evening she likes eating dry feed eukanuba. She likes running, playing with me ond other dogs. We go together to the mountains very often where she meets my parents dog.
I was really interesting in your organization Rescue greyhounds, and even I would like to adopt one but my housbend said that now we can't affort another dog. I love dogs and I would like to know more and more about them, specially about greyhounds. It was very nice to learn something and I'm sure that I will visit your web page more often.

Hi....Six years ago i adopted Quick Betsy she was two and a half years old. There are no words to say how much joy she brought to my life. Well this last weekend (Jan. 29th 2000
) I lost my sweet baby to cancer in a matter of 24 hours, she was only 8 1/2. I don't think i have ever hurt so bad. I know she is in Rainbow Bridge now but i thought i had many more years with her. So i guess what i'm trying to say is hug and love your greyhound everyday because you have no idea when they will be taken away. They give so much and ask for nothing in return but your love.

In Sept.1996 we adopted "Apollo", a 6 Y/O, retired male racer. For 2 years our Apollo was wonderfully content in our home. He provided many hours of enjoyment, companionship, and love. He was loving and patient with our young granddaughter. Our youngest son was a member of his high school band and the high school ROTC unit. Apollo was a frequent visitor at marching band practice (a football field to run on-Greyhound heaven). He captured the hearts of all the kids and became the band's "banner" dog. Yes, Apollo wore the band's banner, just like he had worn those racing banners. He marched (on a leash) with the band. During his last season, we all swore he was "marching" in step with the band. He also, wore the ROTC's banner in parades. I think Apollo would have stood up and saluted the flag, if we had asked him. Apollo was also a hit in our neighborhood. Our frequent walks attracted the attention of every neighbor. His gentle and sweet personality won him numerous friends during his short stay with us. Sadly, in Nov. 1998, Apollo was diagnoised with cancer in his left-hind hip. The decision to put him to sleep was heart-wrenching, but watching him suffer was worse. Our son held a sweet memorial service for Apollo in our back yard. Surprisingly: over 100 band & ROTC members attended, along with 30-40 neighbors. His time with us was short. He gave all his love to anyone who would scratch behind his ears. Six of our neighbors have adopted Greyhounds since meeting Apollo.
This includes us, we now have a 2 Y/O,female---"Gemini". She is great, sweet, and loving. Gemini has filled a void in our life.

I have been reading all the greyt letters in the
guestbook about our wonderful greys and wondering
how we could get the word out about them. I was
watching an Oprah show recently when she had her
two dogs on along with some other dogs and thought
why not a show about our greys. I e-mailed her at
Oprah.com with my idea and am awaiting a reply.
How about we bombard her with e-mails and letters.
We need to get the word out about how wonderful
greyhounds are and what great companions they are.
No greyhound should die when we can help save them. Happy writing! Don't forget Oprah.com

Last monday I adopted a wonderful male brindle named Free Will, now TIGER, from GAP in Colorado Springs. I have other dogs and thought I knew what love is. Wrong. Now I know. Thanks to Tiger. What a blessing he has been in the few days he has enlightened me. One does not know what love is until you are loved by a Greyhound. Thanks for coming into my life Tiger. Love Mom.

If everyone who adopts a greyhounds treats them like she does, then adopted greyhounds must think that they have died and gone to dog-heaven. I am so happy to know that so many people care for these beautiful animals. God bless you.

Foxy came into my life in October last year. She is seven years old and had lived with another family before she came to me. Foxy is a great delight for me, I had never owned a dog in my whole life (66) before. I can't imagine life without my Foxy, She is so laid back, loves everyone especially the children I meet on our daily walks. Foxy's Vet just loves her and will not let her depart without hugs and kisses (Ishould be so lucky) Foxy caught her tail in the screen door a couple of weeks ago and unfortunately had to have 4 inches of her tail amputated. She is recovering nicely.
I have met some wonderful people throught this guestbook who help me with all my perceived problems I think I have with Foxy. Foxy makes me laugh a lot with her antics and if that is all she ever did for me I would be satisfied, but you all know how Greyhounds get under your skin very quickly. thank you all for the support. SAW A SHORT VISIT TO A GREYHOUND FACILITY ON TV ABOUT A MONTH (OR LESS) AGO. ONE ANIMAL WAS DESCRIBED AS NOT SUITABLE FOR ADOPTION. IT APPEARED TO HAVE NO TEETH ON ONE SIDE, HAD SOME MINOR HEALTH PROBLEMS AND WAS ADVANCED IN YEARS. THOUGHT MY WIFE AND I MIGHT BE ABLE TO MAKE ITS REMAINING TIME MORE COMFORTABLE SINCE IT IS LIVING IN A SOLITARY CAGE ANYWAY. IF ANYONE CAN IDENTIFY THE FACILITY, PLEASE ADVISE. THANKS!

I have had rescued Greyhounds since I was a child. In 1980 a Greyhound came walking down my street in California. My family put signs up and an add in the paper regarding the found dog. No one ever claimed her. My parents did not know what she was. We took her to the vet and he said she was a 1 year old Greyhound. We named her Cheetah, because she looked like a cheetah (Cheetah was the first Greyhound, he and other family veterinarians had ever treated for the following 10 years). By now, she was apart of our family, so sensitive, never barked and a sweet gal. Every evening she would stand on the picnic table and look into the kitchen to watch us make her food. She had to be put down in 1993. She brought so much joy and humor to our family. Through the early 1990’s we heard about the Greyhound adoption movement and vowed to always rescue Greyhounds. My family adopted Baby in 1993, and still has her today. How different our lives would be if Cheetah never came down our street. My husband and I adopted Uri 10 months ago and he still does amazing things that we have never seen before. He smiles when we come home or when he is happy (refer to the Top 10 list on this site), he ‘old man grunts’ when he repositions while laying down, just to name a few. I have just started to volunteer for the agency we adopted Uri through www.greyhoundpetsinc.org (GPI has chapters in Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia). Greyhound Pets Inc., is a fantastic organization that is always looking for what would be best for each and every Greyhound. Through, volunteering and further research of the breed I am amazed the misunderstanding of the breed that Greyhounds are vicious and/or hyper. Anyway, please help save these precious dogs. There is nothing like an 80 pound Greyhound who enjoys your company so much he wants to lay on you!

Hello from Canada;
Really enjoyed your guest book. We have two dogs now.
A 15yr old yorkie and a bouv/sheppard 7yrs. We have been
interested in greys after seeing a young male working as
a St.Jonn's pet therapy dog with seniors as our bouvier
Keeshia does. It is always a joy to watch these large dogs
(ours weighs 115 lbs.) with older people. Both of them are so gentle. They seem to know the seniors are frail.
As soon as summer comes around again, we will be checking
out the greys here in Canada. I'm sure we will have a new
owner with us. Keep up the good work.

My Husband and I adopted an Ex-racer from our local Race track about 3 1/2 years ago. Our "DYLAN" broke his left Hock and was put into early retirement at 1 1/2. We were told the usual time for an ex-racer to adapt to the life of a house dog would be about 2 weeks, we are Pleased to announce he adapted in about 2 hours!! Dylan is a big part of our family. He has his own room, he even has his own sitter when we go on business trips and cannot take him along. He is an absolute joy to come home to after a long hard day, Dylan and my husband have male bonding every sunday during football season. He is great with kids and believe it or not he is a good protector (he is very protective of us and his yard).Greys really do take on human characteristics. I find myself telling everyone that is looking for "that perfect animal" to adopt a greyhound. I would and do recommend them to everyone as long as you have a lot of love to give. Greyhounds need a lot of love and in return will give lots of love. When we were looking into adoption I thought that "crate trained" or confining an animal to his crate was cruel, I did a lot of research and talked to the adoption agency about this. We decided to get a crate because even with all that is changing in your dogs life that is his little area that is not going to change he feels comfortable and it acts like his security blanket. We just leave the door open and he comes and goes as he pleases. Good luck and Best wishes with the new addition to your family

Really enjoyed your site. Have had three AKC greyhounds. Lost both our boys, Picasso and Matisse, to old age and illness in April, 1999. We want to adopt this time around so as to save a life. I cannot imagine there would be much difference in the AKC and NGA greyounds, and we definitely want to save a life! Have been researching all the info. This is a wonderful web site and have found many other wonderful links. There are just not enough superlatives to describe greyounds. Once you've had one, you are hooked for life. We have always had dogs, but after we got our first greyhound, cannot imagine not living with one. Hopefully, we will be ready soon.

Adopting Lorrie, a red brindle, was the best choice we ever made. She will be 6 in March and it fantastic with my other two cats. We are looking to adopt another in about 6 months, we put in our order in Oct. and they said that it would be about one year because we want a blue. What I would like to klnow more about or a picture of is a blue brindle, I saw it mentioned in one of the letters. We will be house shopping soon, so I will also be a foster mom to the wonderful creatures that God gave to us. To anyone thing of adopting a Grey, it is the best choice that you can ever make.

I have been thinking of getting a Greyhound for several years. I work with animals as a Dog Groomer and see all sorts of dogs and Greyhounds are just one of a kind. My Yorkshire Terrier is 14 years old and I am starting to think about what I will do when he is gone. He has been a wonderful dog and will be hard to replace. I am really interested in the process I need to go through to adopt a Greyhound. Thank you for such a wonderful site.

We adopted our wonderful girl, Finney, almost four years ago.
She has been a loving addition to our home.
She lived in peace and harmony with our older dog Li Po, a Shih Tzu until his death in Dec. 1998.
Now, she has been adopted by Li Po's favorite cat, Faith.
I wish everyone would adopt one of these remarkable creatures.
She is the first dog my husband has ever liked.

Well I finally did it!! I went to see the greyhounds yesterday. I met Clancy and fell instantly in love. He is such a sweety. I have applied to adopt Clancy. I think my hubby and I will make great parents. I am so excited about him!! I miss him already. Please wish us luck! We need Clancy as much as he needs us. Of course I plan to spoil him. He deserves it. {giggle} what a wonderful program this is to give loving homes to such a wonderful animal. This will be like Christmas all over again.

Hello & Happy New Year from Oyster Bay,NY: Well, Gunner has done it again - torn off a toe nail. I've had Isis for over two years and she has never done it. Gunner has been here for one year and this is his second - this time on his Rt. Hind - again the outside toe- opposite to last time. Back to the peroxide and surgical powder. He naturally won't accept a bandage. I am so glad that I learned last time that they do grow back. I find it interesting that even though I trim his nails monthly this still happens. Perhaps it's because he's so big. Other than that both 'hounds are great!!!

Thank you so much for a great site! I got my first computer this past Christmas and am having a wonderful time finding out all the wonderful places I can visit! Considering my age ("old broad" status!) I'm learning how to use this wonderful technology to learn and, especially for me, to go to all these wonderful sites about animals and learning and making friends along the way! I have been involved with animals for almost 25 years, have worked for Canada's national dog magazine, animal organizations, and a well-known breeder who I helped out
for a few years. I am now proudly and happily owned by a number of dogs, three of them being retired racing greyhounds. They are a wonder!! My life has been truly enriched by their presence. I help out a greyhound rescue and adoption organization here in Canada about an hour's drive from Toronto, known as G.L.O.H.W. -- Greyhound Lovers' of Hamilton-Wentworth. I have worked with a few other organizations and, in my humble opinion, G.L.O.H.W. is "THE" best! They are simply wonderful people who have a never-ending love for these truly wonderful "kids" and have their very best interests at heart. I feel truly privileged to be able to be a part of their ongoing efforts to help this breed. I mainly foster -- that's like being in heaven for me!! Needless to say, I hope that I'll be able to adopt more greyhounds. Thanks for letting me "leave my mark" and, thanks too, for "Celebrating Greyhounds" -- it's a great magazine! Hugs to all those greyt kids out there who have found wonderful new homes and loving people and blessings to those at the many tracks throughout the world who have yet to know the love and kindness of all those who are trying to help them. God Bless!

My husband and I adopted a three year old fawn in September named Kickin' it in. She has become the apple of my eye. She is very affectionate, especially with children and has just started to learn to play. It has been wonderful watching her become part of our family. (She has a seven year old Shepherd/Collie mix sister named Presley Sue). I encourage anyone thinking of getting a dog to consider a greyhound. I find myself promoting greyhound adoption to anyone who wants to listen!

I adopted 2 greyhounds in the summer of 95. They were the loves of my life along with my two children and husband. I had to have the oldest one put to sleep this week because of bone cancer at the age of 8 1/2. Our other grey is 7 now. He misses his friend very much. We are looking for another track near us as we have moved since we adopted our others. I am visiting a track this weekend that hopefully will bring good results. What a "greyt" site. I am owned by 3 wondeful little girls and have fostered many through our rescue group. I take the "shy" little girls who need extra work but the rewards are soooooooooo "greyt". For anyone thinking about adoption, you will find a "fast" friend when you adopt a greyhound. No other pet can come close to the love and friendship you will get from these magnificent dogs if you take the time to give them the love them so deserve.

Great site! We adopted two greyhounds in November 1998, both red brindles. Pretty Boy was only 20 months old when we took him in. He never raced because of a facial injury when he was a pup. His nose is crooked and his canines stick out, but he's so lovable! He actually smiles when he's happy. Brady was 2 1/2 when we visited the track adoption kennel. He came out of his crate and licked me in the face. It was a no-brainer.
Pretty Boy and Brady were great pals. It seemed as if Brady always deferred to Pretty Boy. The week after Christmas 1999 Brady and Pretty Boy managed to dig under the fence in our backyard. We looked all over the neighborhood that night until we received a call from the police. Brady had been hit by a car a few blocks away. We rushed him to the vet, but he didn't survive. Someone found Pretty Boy two days later and we were reunited. He knew that something had happened to Brady and it took him a couple of days to get back to normal. Our family was happy to have him home, but we were all devastated by Brady's death. We miss him very much, but we feel that we gave him a year of love and comfort as a member of our family.
Please continue to educate people about the joys of adopting a greyhound.

We adopted our 3 1/2 year old male red brindle (Parachute) from REGAP of Illinois. I fell in love instantly the first time I saw them at the Oktoberfest in Tinley Park. He adjusted to our home instantly and makes me laugh constantly at his antics. He is a fairly frisky greyhound but still enjoys being the couch potato he was meant to be.

My husband and I are thinking about getting a dog (our first) and an ex-racing greyhound sounds perfect! This website has been a big help providing information about greys so we can make an informed decision. I think I'm hooked! We are looking forward to going to a local meet and greet to find out more. My only concern is that lots of people seem to have more than one greyhound - a testament, I suppose, to how sweet they are. But we only want 1 dog and have no other pets - do greys do all right home alone during the day, or is separation anxiety a big problem? I usually work at home 1 or 2 days a week, and would adjust my schedule to be home as much as possible at first, but that won't last forever. I'd appreciate any insight on this issue. Thanks!

i got my first greyhound when i was 15yrs old. she grew up with me,got married with me and helped me raise 3 children.she was with me for 15 yrs and taught me the true meaning of love and devotion. recently i adopted another puppy (i've had 5 at different times of my life)and decided she needed a friend so also adopted a retired female. they keep me on the move, outside and amused. i learned many years ago, that this is truly the perfect breed.(p.s.) my email name is for the male i lost a few years ago to lupus..he was the love of my boys and my life and we miss him.
