Hi folks,
Dewey '99 is a year away, and we still have a lot of planning and organizing to do, so be please be patient and stay
tuned.
Some people have mentioned that The Greyhound Project is going to be
taking the lead in the organization of Dewey for 1999 (YIKES). Speaking for The Greyhound Project, we are just beginning to pull together some thoughts/ideas on what needs to be done.
If you have any ideas/suggestions or want to help, drop me a note PRIVATELY please.
For those of you who want to get started early here is some very basic information...
WHAT IS DEWEY
The Greyhounds Reach the Beach gathering at Dewey Beach is a
fabulous phenomenon. It is a gathering of greyhound adopters from all
over. Lots of people from various adoption groups attend Dewey, but we
are all there PRIMARILY as people who have adopted one or more of these
extraordinary critters.
EVERYONE IS WELCOME. For three days, everywhere you go, there are
greyhounds and greyhound people. You can talk endlessly about the finer
points of poop-ology, food and feeding (dogs, of course), behavior and
quirky habits and no one thinks you are odd. You can find all manner of
greyhound goodies and generally have a good time with your dogs and
other greyhound people. It is NOT an event for the airing of political
differences about racing or group politics.
We have been welcomed in the community because the people who have
attended the gatherings have been responsible for their dogs (read
cleaned up after themselves and respected private property) and
responsible guests. If we continue to be good representatives on behalf
of the dogs, there is no reason that Dewey cannot continue to grow and
be a benefit both to the community and all of us.
WHEN
The Greyhounds Reach the Beach a/k/a Dewey Beach is on the
Columbus Day weekend each year. Some people arrive early and leave
later, but the scheduled activities are usually on Friday evening,
Saturday and Sunday.
WHERE
The Greyhounds Reach the Beach happens in Dewey Beach, Delaware,
a beach resort area. We may eventually outgrow Dewey and the surrounding
area, but there is NO PLAN to move the great gathering for 1999. The
community has been very good to all of us who arrive every year and from
the comments heard from local business and community people, they are
genuinely pleased to see us (and the dogs, too).
ACCOMODATIONS
The first thing on our list is to get information on additional
available accomodations for people who need to make reservations. Each
year a few more motels either decide to stay open for us or decide to
allow dogs. Because Dewey is a resort community, a large number of the
seasonal motels close after we leave. Some of them closed for the season
before the weekend.
Stay tuned... we will get information out to you soon.
If you have called around and found a new place that will take
reservations for the weekend let us know, again PRIVATELY. We will
update the Dewey section of the Adopt A Greyhound site with the
information for others.
HOW TO KEEP POSTED ON DEWEY DEVELOPMENTS
Please visit this web site to get the latest information on Dewey '99. Be sure to sign up for our mailing list so you'll get the latest news.
We will post general information to Greyhound-L from time to time. We will be mailing via snail-mail information to people who are not on the
list, and we plan to have a Dewey telephone number for people to call for information. There will also be information in Celebrating Greyhounds: The
Magazine.
Stay tuned folks... more later.
Cheers,
Joan Belle Isle
